The Quinte West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be starting a new Focused Patrol for the month of June to help reduce the number of motor vehicle collisions in Trenton. Focused Patrols analyze data to determine crime and traffic trends within municipalities. With the information gathered from these studies, Police are better able to determine where and when their resources should be deployed.
A statistical analysis of collision trends in the City of Quinte West showed that the month of June had the highest number of reported collisions in the business areas of Trenton (along Dundas Street East and Dundas Street West). In June 2015, 18 collisions were reported in these areas. The collisions occurred predominantly on Thursdays and Fridays between noon and 8:00 p.m. The main driver actions that contributed to these collisions were speed, improper turns, and inattentive drivers.
Based on these findings, the Quinte West OPP will maximize their resources and efforts by deploying officers to the right place at the right time. Residents and visitors to Trenton can expect to see an increased officer presence in three main areas:
Dundas Street West in the downtown core
Dundas Street East between South Street and Scott Street
Dundas Street East between Flindall Street and Skyview Trailer Park Road
The ultimate goal of this focused patrol is to reduce the number of collisions in these high risk areas through the use of education and enforcement. The focus on collision reduction will continue from June 1st to June 30th.
