An Ontario dairy co-operative, which already has ownership of one local cheese maker, is expanding its footprint in the region, by buying another.
Gay Lea, which already owns Ivanhoe Cheese in Madoc, has announced it will take over ownership of Black River Cheese in Prince Edward County as well.
Gay Lea’s President and CEO Michael Barrett tells Quinte News Prince Edward County seems like an extremely good fit for their business.
Barrett added that, similar to when the co-op bought Ivanhoe in 2008, regular visitors to Black River won’t notice much of a change.
Barrett says the pruchase will go a long way in continuing to grow a strong and sustainable dairy industry in Ontario.
The purchase goes into effect on June 1, 2016.
