The experts have spoken.
In a report that will be in front of Belleville city council Monday afternoon, Shoalts and Zaback Architects recommend the Veridian/Belleville Water location at 459 Sidney Street as the site for Belleville’s new police station.
They are recommending the existing building be renovated and expanded.
The consultants reviewed three site options.
One was a new build on the “Ben Bleecker” property at the fairgrounds.
It was seen as too expensive, more than $5 million over the $21 million budgeted for a new police headquarters. The report says that there was no guarantee that satisfactory solutions could be found regarding existing leases on that property.
The second option was a new build on the Veridian property, but that was seen as being too costly as well, just slightly less than the “Ben Bleecker” building.
That left the renovation/expansion plan for the Veridian site. The project cost is estimated at just over $20 million.
Belleville city council meets at 4 p.m. Monday at city hall.
