The battle for the Buckland Cup between Trenton and Georgetown begins this Friday.
Today, the Ontario Junior Hockey League announced the schedule for the 2016 OJHL Championship Series, in competition for the Ontario Hockey Association’s (OHA) Frank L. Buckland Trophy (Buckland Cup).
The Championship Series will begin on April 15 and will be completed by Monday, April 25, when game seven is scheduled if necessary. This year’s match-up features the OJHL regular season champion Trenton Golden Hawks versus the runner-up Georgetown Raiders, marking the first time the top two ranked clubs have faced off in the Championship Series since the Wellington Dukes defeated the Aurora Tigers in 2002-03.
The Trenton Golden Hawks, who finished the season as the fourth ranked club in the CJHL’s year-end Top 20 Rankings, make their first trip to the OJHL Championship Series in the franchise’s 20 years of operation. The Georgetown Raiders are making their first appearance in the Final since falling to the St. Michael’s Buzzers in game six of the 2004-05 series. Coincidentally, the Raiders hosted the 2005 Dudley-Hewitt Cup and would defeat the Buzzers in the championship game that year to earn a spot in the 2005 Royal Bank Cup, National Junior ‘A’ Championship that was held in Weyburn, Saskatchewan.
The OJHL will continue the tradition of honouring its year-end award recipients prior to game one of the Championship Series with a special pre-game ceremony held at centre ice.
