The MPP for Prince Edward-Hastings wants the province to follow through on some commitments to a pair of special needs schools in Belleville.
A 2012 report suggested closing some of the province’s special needs facilities, like the Sir James Whitney and Sagonaska schools in Belleville, and consolidating them all in Milton.
Smith tells Quinte News he pressed Education Minister Liz Sandals for answers in question period today and was happy with at least one thing he heard.
Quinte News reported last week that new student applications were no longer being accepted at the school.
He says it’s reminiscent of the situation involving Kemptville College which was slated to close due to funding pressures.
While any decision on a closure won’t be made until later in the spring, Smith says he’ll be visiting the school on Friday to talk with parents and students.
He says that in his conversation with the Minister of Education she also expressed an interest in visiting the school, sometime in the near future.
