The move to decrease the 50 kilometre an hour speed limit through Belleville’s downtown centre led to a lengthy debate at city council last night.
Mayor Taso Christopher supported the idea, saying the city had created an ambiance in the downtown that could lead to a “European civic promenade.”
A bid by Councillor Jack Miller to amend the motion to 40 kilometres an hour failed.
A proposal by Councillor Mitch Panciuk to wait until all phases of the downtown revitalization are complete went nowhere.
In the end, council voted five to four in favour of a 30 kilometre an hour speed limit on Front Street downtown.
