The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded veteran defenceman and their captain Dion Phaneuf to the Ottawa Senators as part of a blockbuster 9 player exchange.
Ottawa also gets forwards Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert and defence prospect Cody Donaghey to the Senators in exchange for defenceman Jared Cowen, forwards Colin Greening, Milan Michalek and Tobias Lindberg as well as Ottawa’s second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.
Phaneuf still has almost five years remaining on a contract that pays him about 7 million annually.
It’s believed trade talks between the teams escalated over the weekend whenk the Leafs played the Senators in Ottawa.
