The Gleaners Food Bank “Down Mexico Way” gala raised thousands more money than organizers expected.
Spokesperson Suzanne Quinlan says the total raised was $23,000, more than the $15,000 to-20,000 expected.
Quinlan says the money will be used to buy new compressors for the walk-in freezer and refrigeration unit.
Quinlan says Gleaners Food Bank is a regional food bank for an area stretching from Picton to Bancroft and Brighton to Napanee.
About 200 people attended the gala event held at the Banquet Centre in Belleville Saturday night.
