One of Prince Edward County’s most important historical landmarks could get a second chance at life.
The future of the Young house that sits in the heart of Athol ward along East Lake has been the subject of many debates over the past two years as the past owners wanted to have it removed as a property of interest on the County Heritage Register so they could sell it.
Even though the home was built in 1851 by Colonel Henry Young the very first U. E. Loyalist to settle in the County in 1783 council later agreed to have it taken off the register.
At Thursday’s committee of the whole meeting, Merril Mascarenhas addressed the horseshoe saying he has purchased The Young House and wants to revive the home at a cost of $500,000 so that he can share its proud 233 year history with the community and visitors to the County.
“We ask that this historical asset receive equal commercial recognition with Wine and Agri-Tourism businesses, because we believe the history of Prince Edward County is an important part of who we are and an integral part of our social, commercial and cultural identity,” said Mascarenhas.
