Thirty years after the Bay of Quinte was named a Great Lakes Area of Concern there’s some good news.
The Bay of Quinte Remedial Action Plan has announced that two of the 11 red-flagged environmental problems in the Bay of Quinte, flagged in 1985, are close to being removed from the “impaired” list.
Spokesperson Sarah Midlane says these are fish tumours and deformities, and the dredging issue.
Midlane says that, previously, debris could be dumped in the bay, but this is no longer allowed.
There are still nine other issues to deal with but Midlane says two of those, more diversity of fish and habitat improvement, are close to being resolved.
The final reports must still be approved by the federal government, Environment Canada and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
The reports can be found at www.bqrap.ca and the final date for comments is February 8.
