The chair had to break a tie vote at city council on proposals to get set for the potential arrival of medical marijuana growers and sellers of marijuana in the City of Belleville.
Councillor Paul Carr worried about a recommendation from the Planning Advisory Committee that would have staff define “marijuana dispensaries” for use in future zoning by-laws.
Carr said he was fine with planning ahead for medical marijuana growers, but said there should be no talk of “dispensaries” because selling marijuana is illegal under federal law.
City planning staff has said it wants to be ready for rule changes on marijuana coming from the new federal government.
In the end, by a vote of 5 to 4, council voted to approve definitions for both growing and selling marijuana.
