The parent company of the Norampac Paper Mill in Trenton has been fined 100-thousand dollars for an environmental offence.
Cascades Canada pled guilty in Belleville Provincial Court on Friday to discharging or allowing black particulate contaminate into the environment, and failing to do everything practicable to prevent harming the environment and to restore it.
Two other discharging or allowing black particulate contaminate into the environment charges, laid by the Environment Ministry last year, were dropped in exchange for the guilty plea. A company spokesman says a steam reformer, used to reuse steam as an energy source, malfunctioned in February, 2007 and black particulate escaped. The charges were laid in August, 2008.
