The City of Quinte West will lobby the federal government to keep it’s six prison farms open.
The federal government has plans to close the farming operations at the prisons..including two in the Kingston area..over the next several months.
Last night..Quinte West Councillor Jim Harrison said the farms were operating on prime agricultural land, and should continue to do so, providing produce for the prisons….and useful work to some 300 prisoners across the country.
The government says it would rather train prisoners in other trades, such as construction, where released prisoners were more likely to find work.
