The Moniz family was a “no-show” for their Ontario Municipal Board appeal agaInst Belleville’s interim bylaw stopping their plans for an adult entertainment club in the city. The Moniz family had wanted to put a strip club in the former Doc’s Palace on Station Street. At city hall the OMB hearing waited the required half hour, yesterday morning, and the Moniz family didn’t show up, so the OMB chair dismissed the appeal. City solicitor Wayne Fairbrother says the Moniz lawyer withdrew from the case two weeks ago. Fairbrother says it’s the first time he’s seen a “no-show dismissal” after 30-years in the business. Carlos Moniz told our newsroom he didn’t show up because Belleville had “crucified him” and treated him “unfairly.” A review of adult entertainment zoning will resume, with a view to having a new bylaw in place by October.
