The company operating as Canada Talc in Madoc has been fined 285-thousand dollars in connection with the death of a young worker at the mine a year and a half ago. In August 2008, 22-year-old Justin Rogers was asphyxiated by a flood of broken rock, sediment and water called muck, while working at the mine in Madoc. The Ministry of Labour found that the control station was located directly in front of the muck tunnel and water had been added to make it flow faster, and Rogers had not completed training. Sherritt International pleaded guilty to failing to take reasonable precaution to protect the worker.
