Northumberland-Quinte West M-P-P Lou Rinaldi hopes First Nations People will be able to keep current tax exemptions when the new harmonized sales tax begins this summer.
A Finance Ministry official told a special tax session hosted by Rinaldi in Port Hope the government is still working on the issue.
Chief Jim Bob Marsden of the Alderville First Nation, near Roseneath, says requests have been made to both levels of government to ensure the tax exemption remains in place, but attempts to meet the federal finance minister have been unsuccessful.. Rinaldi supports keeping the exemption, and he says discussions have been going on with Ottawa.
