Another hurdle cleared for M-P Daryl Kramp’s private member’s bill to rename a sea route through the Arctic Ocean.
The bill, to add the word Canadian to the Northwest Passage, went through second reading in the House of Commons, and will now go to commitee for final approval.
Kramp, who says the new title would verify the sovereignty heritage of the passage as a part of Canadian history, says the concerns of the local Inuit population were considered before the bill went before the house a second time.
He says the wording of the bill will be sympathetic to the Inuit, but the name will not be a legal term, only one that can be used to refer to the geographical feature.
