The number of people receiving welfare support in Hastings-Quinte has dropped for the fourth month in a row. However, the caseload is still considerably higher now than it was a year ago.
Hastings County Social Services reports 3 thousand 443 people received social assistance last month, down 3-and-a-half percent from September. It’s believed people getting jobs and returning to school were the main reasons for the decrease.
Including dependents, 8-thousand-239 people benefitted from social assistance in Hastings-Quinte last month, or 6.3 percent of the population.
