Nobody is claiming responsibility for the piglets abandoned outside the office of local MPP and Agriculture Minister Leona Dombrowsky in Belleville yesterday morning. But you don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to come up with 2,700 suspects. That’s the number of pig farmers across Ontario who are struggling to stay in business, and are lobbying the McGuinty government to bail them out. Seven piglets were found inside a plywood pen at the office on Millenium Parkway. Some bedding was scattered in the pen and there was food and water, but no shade to escape the sun. Dombrowsky says she’s bewildered by the protest, given the recently announced federal assistance for pig farmers…adding it also goes against what she was taught as a youngster on the family farm about respecting your animals and treating them in a dignified way.
