One of the two sets of stairs in Belleville’s downtown will be removed. Last night City Council took this step both as a safety factor and to reduce maintenance costs. Both sets of stairs to Great St. James Street are wooden and often suffer damage by vandals. A staff report indicated the wooden stairs from Hillcrest to Great St. James Street were in poorest condition and the least used. Council decided to remove them and maintain the ones in better condition, juist 115-metres away, from Mount Pleasant Road to Great St. James.
