About 200 inmates at Warkworth Institution who refused to go back to their cells are now returning.
Assistant Warden Anne Anderson says the prisoners began returning “safely and securely” late this morning.
She could not say why the prisoners staged their protest at about 9 o’lock last night, but says a full investigation will be conducted.
There was a break-in at the jail’s health-care centre during the protest, and some medications were stolen. Anderson says inmates were able to access the locked health centre from the prison yard.
