Tyendinaga activist Shawn Brant has been sent to jail on a number of charges, most relating to the shutdown of the Skyway Bridge in Deseronto last month.
Brant faced a total of ten charges for mischief, breaching bail and probation condiions. When he appeared before Justice Stephen Hunter in Belleville court Brant pleaded not guilty. He did not put up a defence, some charges were withdrawn, but he was found guilty on six charges of mischief, failing to comply with probation, and failing to comply with conditions. Justice Hunter handed down a five month jail term. Brant had been returned to jail last month to complete fifty-three more days of his sentence in the 2008 C-N rail line blockade. He had been released early on condition he not participate in demonstrations, but was arrested at the Skyway Bridge shutdown.
