A major drug-dealing case in the Quinte Region will be affected by the ongong defence lawyers legal-aid boycott. A total of 27-pople were arrested in an 18-month undercover police operation called Project Fortitude last year. Those cases are now going through the Belleville courts. President of the local Criminal Lawyers Association, Edward Kafka, says the boycott affects homicides and other serious cases. He says it will affect at least one or two of the people charged in Project Fortitude since defence lawyers won’t take the cases during the boycott. Kafka says defence lawyers do not get enough funding to pay for experts and extra hours on serious cases.
