The ongoing native blockade continues at the Skyway Bridge in Deseronto…but, it may not be for long. Callers to our newsroom indicate the OPP are mobilizing multiple units from as far away as Collingwood and Parry Sound and may try and resolve the situation which began last Sunday night. Protest leader Shawn Brant has said he won’t leave until the Federal Government begins negotiations to resolve the ongoing crising at Akwesasne near Cornwall. Mohawks there are upset with the government’s decision to arm border guards. In the meantime, Highway-49 remains blocked at the north-end of the Skyway Bridge.
08:00 hrs update
Over a dozen people are in custody after police ended the blockade at the Skyway Bridge near Deseronto.
O-P-P Sergeant Kristine Rae says officers from the O-P-P and Tyendinaga Mohawk Police service approached the site at 6-30 this morning.
Some protestors left, but 13 others were arrested for mischief. A Tyendinga Police officer suffered a hand injury during the arrests, in which there was some resistance, and two protestors were taken to hospital. One was treated for a minor injury, and is back in police custody, and the other is still at hospital complainig of a shoulder-back injury.
The bridge is being checked to ensure it is safe, before it is reopened later today.
