The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, the Township of Tyendinanaga and concerned citizens are stepping up their battle to have Richmond landfill site near Napanee shut down permanently.
The move comes in light of recent announcements by the company “Waste Management” that it intends to continue landfilling operations for “several” more years.
The group has filed a joint application under Ontario’s environmental bill of rights in a bid to get the dump shut down.
Chief R. Don Maracle of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte says the territory is downstream of the dump and at risk of the negative impact.
The reeve of Tyendinaga Township Margaret Walsh says the site’s close proximity to surface watercourses, farms, and residences makes it unsuitable to continue.
