Belleville police are asking for the public’s help in finding a missing woman.
Twenty-two year old Joy Wesley hasn’t been heard from since April 30th when she left a local residential facility.
She is described as 5 foot 2 inches and 240 pounds with shoulder-lenght dark hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information is asked to call Belleville Police or Crime Stoppers.
Walleye World Derby underway
The 2012 Fishing season officially opened at 12:01 this morning… and so did the 2012 Kiwanis Walleye World Fishing Derby on the Bay of Quinte.
Anglers from near and far have descended on the bay to try and “land the big one” that could win them one of a multitude of prizes.
Officials at the Trenton Centennial Park Headquarters says it’s been a busier start to the derby than in previous years.
The Derby attracts up to 5,000 anglers from all over North America.

Soccer, hockey stars, more at Zwick’s Park
Soccer, autographs, food, music and a silent auction are going to be a part of the first ever Quinte Old Boys Soccer Development Day in Belleville.
Today at Zwicks Park, Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw, Philadelphia Flyers pick Nick Cousins, and Malcolm and Jordan Subban are going to be signing autographs to raise money for Parkinson’s Research.
The day is part of a soccer skills clinic for kids five to 14.
The soccer skills go from ten to three and the autographs are from 12:30 to 2:00.

OPP and local business to battle hunger
Quinte West O-P-P and a local business are getting set to help raise awareness about hunger this upcoming week.
May 7th-11th is “Hunger Awareness Week” and the O-P-P and Smylie’s Independant in Trenton are holding a food drive in support of local food banks.
Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at Smylie’s on Dundas all week… and O-P-P will be trying to “fill their trailer” with food by capping off the week with a food-drive on the 12th from 9:30am until 1pm.
O-P-P say 900-thousand people in Canada have relied on food banks just in the past month… and the need in Quinte is not much different.
Pedal For Hope is a big hit, could expand
The first annual Quinte region Pedal For Hope has wrapped up… and is being deemed as a big success.
The week-long event raised over $15,000 to support kids with cancer.
Organizers say they’re hoping to extend the ride to two weeks next year… and add more to the 10 schools who participated this year.
An expansion of the program would be in line with other regions like Peterborough… that raised over 230,000 to support the same cause with a three week ride.
Drug bust in Bancroft
Three people from Toronto face drug charges after a stop on Bridge Street in Bancroft today.
The O-P-P Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, Drug Enforcement Unit, Community Drug Action team and Canine unit were all involved in executing a warrant on the vehicle in question.
Investigators foudn about 5-thousand dollars worth of cocaine as well as 5-thousand dollars cash.
41-year old David Cameron and 34-year olds Ayisha Ottley and Kevin Walters… all of Toronto… have been charged with Possesion of Cocain and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Cameron will be back in court on May 9th… while Ottley and Walters were released from custody and will see a judge next on May 15th.
Watch out for tractors on roads: OPP
A recent collision which indirectly involved a farm-tractor… has prompted O-P-P to remind the public about “sharing the roads” with farm vehicles.
The most noticeable issues drivers face when it comes to farm-vehicles are speed, size and visibility .
Police say car drivers should be patient while driving slowly behind a tractor… and make sure it is safe to pass before doing so.
Police also say operators of farm machinery on local roads are bound to strict laws and regulations… and those who are unfamiliar with these rules can check the Ministry of Transportation website.
Strange spring temps trouble fruit farmers
The price of fruit in Ontario could shoot up come summer time.
That’s because the early blast of spring weather in March… followed by a cold stretch… has severely damaged the Province’s fruit crop.
Fruit plants were tricked by the warm weather into blooming… before cold weather came and wiped those blooms.
Colin Campbell of Campbell’s Orchard’s on Rednersville Road says it’s still too early to tell exactly how much crop has been affected… but some orchards in Ontario have reported 80 to 100 percent of their crop may be unharvestable.
Of the 1-million blossoms on his farm… Campbell says they only need to draw 5 percent of that to consider it a “good harvest”.
Phone scam scare in Belleville
Another report of a telephone scam in Belleville.
A resident who called our newsroom says he received a call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft… who told him his computer was contaminated.
The suspected fraudster will call and offer to remotely access your computer and “clean it up’.
However… scammers use this trick to not only gain access to someone’s computer… but also to all of their personal information.
Police have reminded the public to never give out personal information over the phone… and if you receive a call like this to hang up the phone… and notify authorities.
OPP arrest scrap-metal theft suspects
Police are crediting high-quality surveillance footage with helping to lead them to some suspects in a scrap-metal theft.
Police were originally called by the owner of “Perfect Mounts” in Brighton on April 29th after scrap metal was taken from the property.
After looking at the security tape… police arrested 19 year old Brandon Poff of Brighton, 23 year old Paul Reddom of Cramahe Township and 18 year old Devon Loughridge of Brighton.
All 3 were charged with theft under 5000 dollars and possession of property obtained by crime.
Poff also faces a charge of breaching probation.
All three suspects were held for bail hearings.
Garden tools stolen from shed
A number of gardening tools have been stolen from a shed in Centre Hastings.
Provincial Police were dispatched at 6:00 last night after owners of a shed on Atkinson Road said someone had pried the padlock off the door of their shed the night before.
Police say suspects stole a Stihl Weed-eater, a Homelite leaf-blower, a chain-saw an air compressor and other times.
Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or have any details is asked to call Centre Hastings O-P-P or Crime Stoppers.
Local company to do 8-Wing construction
A Brighton construction company will be doing some work at 8 Wing Trenton this summer.
Borchert’s Moving and Construction will demolish the old outdoor swimming pool on the base’s south side, and build a new equipment storage building nearby.
Borchert’s will do the job for 242 thousand dollars.
The work is expected to be done by the end of summer.
Car hits pedestrian in Napanee
A woman was injured after getting hit by a car on Wednesday in Napanee.
Crews were called to John Street around 9:30 after a woman walking was struck by the vehicle turning into a parking lot.
There’s no word yet on charges.
Defense rests at Hughes’ trial
There are no more witnesses to be called at the Myles Hughes murder trial.
A Sun Media report says three witnesses were called by the defense yesterday in an effort to show Hughes shot Roy Mays Junior in self defense.
The crown meantime tried to call into question the validity of witness testimony.
Next week the judge will hear final submissions and jury deliberations will begin after that.
No disease in dead sheep: CFIA

Some of the troubled sheep from a farm near Hastings have met a tragic end.
Shepherd Montana Jones says nine of her flock were culled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on Saturday and the autopsy results have come back negative.
The CFIA began investigating Jones’ flock when they suspected her sheep may have a disease called scrapie.
The government agency says testing can only be done on the sheep by killing them.
The CFIA says that one sheep that died at the farm recently did, in fact, test positive for scrapie. Shepherd Jones disputes that finding.
Jones has retained a lawyer to fight for the rest of her flock which remain hidden at an unknown location by a group calling themselves the Farmers Peace Corp.
Highway seven closure investigated
The OPP are investigating a truck fire near Kaladar.
Emergency crews responded to the scene on highway seven shortly after 3:00 this morning when an 18-wheeler caught fire.
There were traffic delays all morning as the highway was down to a single lane.
The OPP says the highway was completely reopened by 12:40 this afternoon.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
Quinte West artists unite
Artists and their fans in Quinte West have come together to find like-minded people in the area.
The “Arts Quinte West” group is launching a campaign called “Are you creative?” in an effort to bring artists and artisans together.
The campaign will involve social media and also use the group’s newly-designed Web site.

Bufala di Vermont to open in Quinte West
Quinte West has fast become a place known for its friendliness toward water buffalo.
The meat of the animal is a delicacy low in sodium, and its yogourts and cheeses are popular for their pure white colour and richness.
Frank Aballe says he’s moved his successful business to Quinte West from Vermont because it has the only municipal government that wanted to cooperate.
Aballe says he’ll hire between three and five local people to help at his meat-curing operation on Hamilton Road once he gets established.
The Bufala di Vermont operation in Quinte West will dry-cure meat from the animals raised on its Quebec farm.
The water buffalo at another local farm – The Ontario Water Buffalo Company in Stirling - are originally from Aballe’s herd in Vermont.
Fire at Greif Packaging
There’s no damage estimate and the cause is unknown following an industrial fire in Belleville.
Crews responded to the scene at Greif Packaging Systems on University Avenue around eight this morning and found a small fire beneath a piece of equipment.
The fire was quickly put out and operations resumed after crews cleared the area of smoke.
Greif has operations in more than 55 countries and makes plastic drums at its Belleville site.
Foul play caused man’s death
Prince Edward OPP are blaming the death of a Bloomfield man on foul play.
The body of 46-year-old Thomas McCormick was found at 51 Stanley St. just after midnight on Monday.
An autopsy has revealed McCormick’s death to be a result of foul play, but police will not reveal the actual cause of death.
Charged with second-degree murder is the victim’s 53-year-old roommate, Lawrence Markwell.
Belleville building solid in April
Belleville had a solid month of building activity, if a lot less than last April.
The city’s Engineering & Development Services Department shows a decrease in development this April over last.
The total value of construction in April was $4,896,155, more than $2 million less than last year.
Part of the reason is a big drop in commercial building activity but an increase in private homes being built.
Court appearance, autopsy in County death
A post-mortem and a bail hearing are both being held today in relation to a suspicious death in Bloomfield.
53-year-old Lawrence Markwell is appearing in Picton court on charges of second-degree murder.
A post-mortem is being done in Ottawa on the body of the 46-year-old man with whom Markwell rented a house in Bloomfield.
Prince Edward OPP are investigating.
Commuter Challenge comes to Quinte
Five members of the Hastings and Prince Edward Board of Health took up the “commuter challenge” on their way to a meeting today, walking part way or carpooling.
It was in support of the 2012 Commuter Challenge coming to the Quinte region in June. Spokesperson Tanya Hill says the idea is to show people that there are more “active ways” of getting around than just the car, including walking to work, or part-way to work.

Art show opens in Belleville
A student art show, then an “art walk,” that’s what’s happening in Belleville’s downtown this month.
The first annual Downtown Belleville Student Art Show opens at the Bohemian Penguin Hall tomorrow evening.
The idea is to bring young students downtown and also give their art a broader audience than just the school community.
Chair of the organizing committee Mike Malachowski says there are 46-works in the juried show. These include digital and electronic, as well as poetry, dance and the visual arts.
After the two-day show at the Penguin, the art will be featured in downtown business windows. Malachowski says a map will be available for people to enjoy an art walk throughout the month of May.
Volunteers honoured in Belleville
The provincial government pays tribute to volunteers in the Quinte Region this week.
The Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration will honour about 190 people from Belleville and the surrounding region for their contribution to local organizations.
The awards ceremony will be at the Banquet Hall in Belleville this evening.
More than 10,000 volunteers will be honoured across the province, over the three month period ending in June.
Campbell Street plans on display
Belleville residents will get an advance peek, and a chance to comment on, the proposed redesign of Campbell St. in the downtown.
The proposed $750,000 facelift for Campbell St. will be on public display Friday afternoon.
Deputy Director of Engineering Ray Ford says there needs to be some watermain and road work to widen the sidewalks. Ford says the street will be more pedestrian-friendly, with new lighting and benches.
Ford says there will be improved parking behind the library and improved signage to the two large parking lots nearby. The public information session begins at 3:30 Friday afternoon at the public library.
Bioniche to launch dog drugs
A Belleville pharmaceutical company has announced another break-through – in fact, two of them.
Bioniche Life Sciences is launching two canine cancer medicinal products on the market.
One of them will be launched in North America as early as July.
President Graeme McRae says it’s a major opportunity given that the global incidence of cancer in dogs in about 4 million new cases annually. McRae says it is the leading disease-related cause of death in dogs, with 1/4 dying of cancer.
OPP officer shaves head for cancer
“I did it for my brother”… those were the words of a police officer in Prince Edward County who has shaved her head.
On Monday, OPP Constable Kim Guthrie had her hair removed at Prince Edward Collegiate in an effort to raise money for cancer research.
Constable Guthrie says a woman shaving their head has alot more power than a man.
Donations can still be made at the Prince Edward County detachment.
There’s also a teen in Prince Edward County whose fighting the disease and Guthrie says she did it for her too.
Trent-Severn workers wondering
Federal employees working on the busy Trent Severn Waterway could see their hours cut back as the government looks at ways to cut spending.
Every waterway worker has received notices that they could be laid off or have adjustements made to their working conditions.
There are 185 people working along the Trent Severn system, 165 of them unionized.
The federal government is planning on cutting almost 20,000 jobs across the country.
Response teams positioning in Trenton
There’s going to be a quick response team to help staff at long term care homes in the Quinte region soon.
30 Registered nurses, and personal workers have been hired across this part of Ontario, and are forming mobile response teams to help calm elderly residents who are acting up because of aging, or illness.
Many elderly people who are causing problems at homes end up going to hospital emergency departments, but with mobile response teams, that won’t happen as much.
Southeast Local Health Integration Network CEO Paul Huras says the teams won’t just be responding to emergencies.
A mobile response team will soon be operating out of Crown Ridge Place in Trenton serving the entire Quinte region.
Cheezies inventor dies in Belleville

A local tycoon and “inventor of Cheezies” has died.
Hawkins Cheezies founder, James E. Marker, died at home last night at the age of 90.
Marker was still playing the role of vice president at the company when he passed away.
He was also a long-time Rotarian and owner of the Belleville Airport.
Hawkins Cheezies have been enjoyed for their superior crunchiness since 1949.
Belleville Minor Hockey tryouts
Tryouts for Belleville Minor Hockey Rep Teams have begun.
This year B .M.H.A. has been moved up to “AA” status however the AE Jr. Bulls team program is still in existence as well.

Bulls host rookies
As the Ontario Hockey League prepares for its Championship series between the London Knights and Niagara Icedogs, the Belleville Bulls prepare for next season.
35 draft picks from this year and last and free agents will be on the Rink “B” ice at the Quinte Sports Centre Friday and Saturday for an orientation camp. There are 2 scrimmages. Friday at 4 and Saturday morning at 10.
The public is welcome to come out and watch.
McKinney leads Canada
Belleville’s Christi McKinney scored 3 goals and 3 assists to lead Team Canada over Austria 13-0 at the Womens Under 19 World Floorball Championships in Slovakia.
Victoria Chapman had a goal and assist and goaltender Naomi Najem Douglas also of Belleville had an assist while stopping 7 shots for the shutout.
Canada has a win and a tie. Their next game is Friday against Denmark.
Veridian and Power Stream talk
The company that operates Belleville’s power system is exploring a possible merger with a bigger utility company.
Published reports say Veridian Corp. and Power Stream have had preliminary discussions on an amalgamation.
Veridian has 115 thousand customers in Belleville, Pickering, Ajax, and Clarington.
Power Stream has 335 thousand people in a dozen communities north of Toronto.
Sources say that serious negotiations on a merger between Veridian and Power Stream have not started..yet.
Body found in Bloomfield
4PM UPDATE: 53-year-old Lawrence Markwell of Bloomfield is charged with second degree murder. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.
There’s been a suspicious death in Prince Edward County early this morning.
Prince Edward County OPP say they responded to a 9 1 1 call to a house on Stanley Street in Bloomfield just after midnight.
There they found the body of a 46 year old man. Police then arrested a 53 year old man, who was also at the residence.
That man is in custody, and faces charges. It’s not known what those charges might be at this time.
Police say the men knew each other.
The identity of the dead man will be released after notification of next of kin.
Belleville’s credit rating improves
Belleville has just received some good financial news that puts it in good shape for growth in the future.
The U.S. rating index Standard and Poors has just announced Belleville has a Double-A-minus credit rating, the best it’s ever had.
Mayor Neil Ellis says this is good news for investment since any industry or commercial venture looking for sites will check out the credit rating of the city.
Mayor Ellis says the upgraded rating reflects the work of council over the past five years especially “in this economy.”
He says Standard and Poors thinks Belleville is “on the right track.”
Joyceville Institution lockdown ends
Joyceville Institution has gone back to normal operations after being locked down on April 24.
Officials sent a press release this afternoon saying visits to the prison have resumed.
Officers report having seized a number of contraband items during the lockdown.
Another local prison, in Warkworth, came out of a three-day lockdown yesterday.
Warkworth Institution back to normal
Visits have resumed at Warkworth Institution.
Officials have announced that operations yesterday returned to normal at the medium-security prison.
Warkworth went into lock-down mode on Friday after a tip indicating there might be contraband inside.
Officials have not said if they found any of the suspected contraband items.
Shepherd alleges government errors
A Trent Hills shepherd maintains the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is making false findings of the disease “scrapie” in her flock of heritage sheep.
Montana Jones, who runs Wholearth Farmstudio near the village of Hastings, says a signed government document declaring the offal was “contaminated by scrapie” was dated 20 days before any samples were actually shipped to the lab for testing.
The C.F.I.A has taken several sheep away from the farm to be destroyed.
Meanwhile, 31 of her rare Shropshire sheep are still missing, taken away by a group known as the “Farmers Peace Corps”.
The sheep were hidden away before the authorities could remove the sheep to be destroyed.
The matter is under a judicial review before the courts.
Another store for downtown Trenton
Another new business has officially opened in downtown Trenton.
The newest branch of Northumberland Hearing Centres opened at 30 Quinte St. W. with a celebration this morning.
The location is the fifth to be opened by the company and one of many businesses newly opened in downtown Trenton.
“Leash and Scoop” Challenge to begin
Safety is cited as the reason for a local campaign to have dog owners leash their dogs and clean up after them.
The Lower Trent Conservation Authority will launch their “Dogs on Leash Challenge” this Saturday.
Spokesperson Marilyn Bucholtz says conflicts with dogs on their walking trails are nothing new.
Bucholtz says not everyone feels safe around dogs and they want all patrons to enjoy their time at conservation areas.
Bucholtz says staff will help spread the word by appearing at other conservation areas throughout the summer.
Half Marathon raises funds for TMH
A benefit event for Trenton Memorial Hospital has raised over $20,000, with money still coming in.
Officials with the hospital foundation stated today in a press release the sum exceeded their goal of making the $15,000 they did at last year’s event.
The Healthy Half Marathon was held last Sunday in Trenton.
Local girls lead Canada to tie
Moira Secondary School’s Victoria Chapman scored with 1:49 left in the third period to help Team Canada tie Latvia 4-4 in the opening game of the Womens Under 19 World Flooorball Championships in Slovakia.
Belleville’s Christi McKinney scored twice and Kassandry Eby had the other.
Canada’s next game is tomorrow against Austria. This is Canada’s first time competing at the World Floorball Championships
2 injured in Campbellford area
There was a bad accident on County Road 30 near Campbellford late yesterday afternoon.
Northumberland OPP say a pickup truck lost control on the shoulder of the highway trying to pass a farm tractor.
The driver of the truck, 48 year old Lorie Vardy of Campbellford was airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto where she is in stable condition.
The passenger, 70 year old Ann Vardy of Campbellford was treated and released from hospital.
County Road 30 was closed for 5 hours so police could re construct the accident scene.
The investigation continues.
County teacher honoured
It’s the youngest-ever Educator of the Year for Hastings and Prince Edward counties in the 45-year history of the award.
The winner is 30-year-old Robbie Garden, a math and business teacher at Prince Edward Collegiate.
Garden is the coach of the Collegiate’s basketball teams and started an after-school basketball league called County Clippers for elementary school students.
The Sir Mackenzie Bowell Award for Educator of the Year will be presented to Garden at the Bay of Quinte Country Club on May 10-th.
Drugs and weapons in Belleville
Belleville police and the OPP made a fairly big drug bust in downtown Belleville Sunday night.
Police, including a canine unit, raided a location on Front Street, and seized marijuana, hashish, and oxycontin, along with cash, firearms, and ammunition.
56 year old Richard Bellis of Front Street, Belleville, faces charges.
Police seized over 5 pounds of marijuana, along with around 100 thousand dollars cash, and shotguns and 22 caliber rifles.
Brandon Gray goes to prison
The final of four men convicted in the killing of a Mississauga man in Tweed two years ago was sentenced today.
In Belleville court, Brandon Gray received six years in prison for his role in the beating death of Bradley Van Diepen on May 22, 2010, at Trudeau Park. With credit for time already served, it means Gray will spend a little over three more years in prison.
Van Diepen’s two sisters, aunts, and his grandmother and father all read victim impact statements to the court.
One family member told Gray, “I hope you rot in hell.”
In passing sentence, Justice Richard Byers said he took Gray’s past into consideration, which includes several assault-related charges.
Kadeem Francis, Azad Sooknanan and Bernard Rainford were all previously sentenced for their roles in the Victoria Day weekend death.
School board gets young new trustee

A Belleville student has been elected student trustee on the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic school board.
He is Justin Patrick, a Grade 11 student at St. Theresa Secondary School.
Patrick was elected at the Student Senate meeting in Napanee today. He’ll be inducted at a Board of Trustees meeting on June 12.
His term runs through the 2012- 2013 academic year.
Teens charged in dog’s drowning
Two teens have been charged after police found a dog dead in Napanee.
OPP say the dog was found underwater at the Kimmett Side Road quarry, chained to a make-shift anchor to ensure the animal drowned.
Police say they did multiple interviews as part of their investigation and as a result have charged 18-year-olds, Carl Wood and Travis Haaksman, with killing or injuring an animal.
The two are due in court on May 29.

Firefighters and equipment were on the move a while ago this morning in Picton.
A caller said there was thick black smoke coming from a medium sized commercial lake boat at the iron ore docks outside of Picton.
Firefighters responded only to find that there were no problems, and the ship was at dock, unloading.
The incident happened shortly after 6:00 this morning.
Solar panels to move in near Picton
The land is being cleared for two big solar panel projects in Prince Edward County.
Northland Power received final approvals from the province for two 10 MW solar installations on Burr Rd., near highway 62, in the County.
Manager of Solar Development for Northland, Mike Lord, says they hope to have the projects running in the spring of next year.
He says they shouldn’t bother the residents living nearby.
Northland and builders, Aecon, are still working on finalizing building permits with Prince Edward County before construction can begin.
When finished, the solar farms will be able to generate enough green power to light up a total of 2600 houses.
Pedestrian injured in Belleville crash
A 69-year-old Belleville man is in hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a vehicle early last evening in the city’s west end.
Belleville Police say the accident happened on Sidney St., near W. Moira St., around 6:00.
The driver was not injured. An investigation continues.
Sidney St. was closed last evening for five hours.
If you have any information on the accident, you’re asked to call the Belleville Police.
Quinte West vies for fishing title
There’s another online contest starting after midnight tonight, and this time, it’s all about fishing.
The specialty channel, World Fishing Network, is holding it’s annual Ultimate Fishing Town contest.
On line voting starts after midnight tonight, and goes through until May 31.
Local World Fishing Network ambassador, Joshua Logan, says he’s nominated Quinte West to be the Ultimate Fishing Town.
He says Quinte West is the home of a huge Walleye derby every spring, and that there’s fishing for everyone here.

Trenton marathon raises hospital funds
It was a beautiful day for a run yesterday, and for raising money for a good cause.
It was the third annual Healthy Half Marathon event on behalf of the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation.
Close to 200 runners and walkers participated in the Trenton run.
Executive Director of the Trenton Hospital Foundation, Wendy Warner, says the money raised will buy surgical equipment to treat ACL injuries.
The final tally isn’t in yet, but it’s expected that more then last year’s total of $15,000 will be raised.
Man injured in Belleville fire
A man was burned and taken to Belleville hospital yesterday morning after another apartment fire in the city.
Fire Prevention Officer, Lyle Quennell, says firefighters responded at around 7:30 yesterday morning to an apartment at 485 Bridge St. E.
The building is a three-storey Hastings County Housing facility.
The cause is under investigation by the Belleville Fire Department and the Ontario Fire Marshall.
On Saturday morning, there was an apartment fire on Turnbull St. There were no injuries.
Careless smoking was the cause of that fire.
Belleville’s solar dollars adding up
The Belleville solar panel project is now bringing revenue in the city’s bank account.
The panels on the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre and the transit building have generated $40,000 in their first month.
Belleville Mayor Neil Ellis says they would like to continue investing in renewable energy on city-owned buildings.
Council invested the $3.1 million through the Feed In Tariffs Program. The project didn’t affect taxes.
X-rays may be coming to Madoc
Efforts continue to bring x-ray facilities to the Tri Area Medical Center in Madoc.
Centre Hastings Deputy Reeve, Tom Simpson, says he has two private companies interested in renting space at the medical center.
The companies would offer “imaging” services to the public.
Simpson says having x-rays in Madoc would save a lot of people from having to drive long distances to hospitals.
Rail Safety Week launched
Don’t be suprised if you’re stopped at railway crossings this week.
Today is the start of the annual Rail Safety Week.
CN Police will be marking the occasion by having officers at rail crossings and at the VIA rail station warning people about the dangers of trespassing on the tracks.
Last year, 70 people were killed and 42 were injured in accidents at railway crossings.
Jungle Cats coming to Picton
It looks as though there’ll be a different look to the Canada Day celebrations in Picton this year.
Prince Edward County council’s Committee of the Whole gave it’s approval to an exemption from a by-law that would allow wild animals to be displayed in downtown Picton on Canada Day.
The various animals would be part of a travelling educational exhibit from the Jungle Cat World Park.
A couple of residents protested the decision, saying it was cruel to have the animals travelling distances on hot summer days.
However, the exemption requested by the Picton Business Improvement Area was approved by the committee.
Final sentencing in Trudeau Park killing
The final man of four charged in the beating death of a Mississauga man at Tweed’s Trudeau Park in 2010 will be sentenced today.
24-year-old Brandon Gray of Pefferlaw has been in jail after pleading to guilty to manslaughter in the death of Bradley Van Diepen.
Three other men – Kadeem Francis of Belleville, Azad Sooknanan of no fixed address and Bernard Rainford of Barrie – have already been sentenced.
Local lead National Floorball team
Team Canada routed Austria 10-0 in a tune-up game for the World Under 19 Womens Floorball Championships.
Christi McKinney of Belleville scored twice while Victoria Chapman and Stirling’s Clarissa Tipping added singles. Naomi Douglas-Najem gets the shutout.
Canada’s opens the World Championships in Nitra Slovakia agaisnt Latvia tomorrow.
Local black belts
8 local Jiu Jitsu artists successfully passed black belt exams in Mississauga yesterday.
Advancing to third degree was Murray Mahoney of Tweed, a student of Robert Walther. Sue Heuving earns her second degree black belt. She’s a student of Lynne Dafoe. And winning first degree belts were Alexander Town and William Reynolds, students of Greg Magwood. As well as Allan Bryans, Sarah Heuving, Robert Preston and Michael Acquin.
