Emergency personnel say a woman trapped in her car by arcing powerlines, after she crashed into a pole, suffered only minor injuries.

The crash happened around 3:20 yesterday afternoon on Centre Street in Frankford.

Quinte West Fire Chief John Whelan says hydro crews arrived within 20 minutes of being called and then firefighters used the jaws of life to pry open the door and pull the driver out.

The woman was treated at the scene and released.

There’s been no word from Quinte West OPP as to any charges.

While a couple of Quinte West councillors felt the decision was rushed, council has decided to move a war memorial from the old Sidney municipal building to the Westminster United Church on Wallbridge-Loyalist Road.

World War II veteran and church member Roscoe Cummings told council the new location will allow more space for services and better visibility of the memorial itself.

Councillors Terry Cassidy and Don Kuntze felt the public should have been consulted more because the memorial is being moved from a public place onto private property.

The motion passed and city staff say they will move the stone and flagpoles as soon as possible.

The project will cost about $1,000.

(Photo: TJ Champagne Photography/Submitted)

The Belleville Chamber of Commerce heard from their Member of Provincial Parliament today.

Todd Smith talked at a breakfast this morning, about the Ontario budget and what it means for the Quinte region in particular.

Smith says one concern in Quinte is the cancellation of an apprecticeship training credit for call centres.

Smith says the training was pegged at $45 million, the exact amount the budget reinvested in the music industry, mainly in Toronto.

The debt and defecit were also discussed at today’s breakfast at the Travelodge.

Combined it’s more than $280 billion, more than all other provinces combined.

Councillor Craig Kerr says a story published in the Star is not only factually incorrect but comments attached to it were defamatory.

Campbellford was in third place, just a few votes behind Gananoque.

The Ultimate Fishing Town last year was the village of Hastings in Trent Hills.

After learning a little bit more about the program, Quinte West Council is not quite ready to designate the city as a “Blue Community”.

In order to become a “Blue Community,” a number of motions need to be passed, including one banning the sale of bottled water at all city facilities and events, as well as one declaring water to be a “human right”.

Council had no problem with the latter motion, but CAO Gary Dyke says while doing his research, he came across nearly as many reasons not to approve the plan as there were to approve it.

So council has decided to have staff provide a more detailed report before any decisions are made.

Dyke says that report will be given to council at the regular meeting on June 17th, at the earliest.

Another successful fundraiser for the Gleaners Food Bank last weekend.

The Ride for Hunger by local motorcycle clubs and individuals raised $3,200 for the food bank.

The cloudy weather likely affected the turnout, as there were fewer riders this year than last, when over 200 bikes rode in the event.

Grade 9 student Tyler Brown says offering residents free biodegradable doggie bags would help keep Brighton clean.
