After the release of a migratory bird study by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the American Bird Conservancy is calling for a 16 kilometre buffer around the Great Lakes, including Lake Ontario to keep wind farms a long way from shore.
A report in the London Free Press states that a 16 kilometre “no wind farm zone” would eliminate virtually all of Ontario’s current wind turbine installations plus the ones recently approved.
The Wildlife Service study shows a high level of bird and bat activity along all of the Great Lakes on both sides of the border, with wide, sweeping flight paths through wind farms.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Canadian Wind Energy Association says wind turbines are meant to combat pollution, which is the biggest threat to birds and animals, and that cats and collisions with vehicles and buildings kill more birds and bats than wind farms do.
