Fiery crash on 401 near Gananoque

A collision on the 401 near Gananoque left two tractor-trailers destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon.
Two other vehicles were also involved in the crash that happened around 4:30 p.m.
Four people suffered non-life-threatening injuries. One of the tractor trailer drivers suffered serious injuries, although non-life threatening.
Crews were on scene this morning removing one of the badly-burned tractor-trailers.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation and charges are pending.
QHC sets big financial goal
A big goal has been predicted by the Belleville General Hospital Foundation.
Officials said at the QHC annual general meeting they’re looking to raise $2.5-million dollars for the hospital and its equipment in the new fiscal year.
Spokesperson Ed Lehtinen says their British Invasion Gala in September could raise ten per cent of the goal alone.
Lehtinen says it was a big year for new donors, with 1,930 people coming on board with gifts for the first time.
A good year for QHC
Quinte Health Care has finished meetings for the 2011-12 year.
On Tuesday, the board held its annual general meeting and members said they were thrilled with the year that was and the year that is to come in the fall.
CEO Mary Clare Egberts says the strategic plan is going to be the main focus for 2012-13.
QHC finished with close to a $1-million dollar surplus, but said with their funding shrinking for the upcoming year, they will have to start focusing on their financial plan.
Signage coming to Wiser Road
Signs at a turn north of Belleville cannot come soon enough for residents of a Cannifton-area suburb.
Just before Christmas, two women were killed at a turn off Hwy. 37 to Wiser Road.
A truck pushed the vehicle into oncoming traffic, where the driver didn’t realize the car was stopped.
Transportation Ministry Spokesperson Brandi Duhaime says they will begin installation of signs in the next few months.
The incident was just one of several accidents at the turn in recent years which has also caused serious injury.
Belleville and Trenton celebrate Canada Day
Big celebrations are planned in Belleville and Quinte West for Canada’s 145th birthday tomorrow.
“The Friendly City” will host events all day at Zwick’s Park including lots of displays and activities, a stock car simulator, a petting zoo and more.
Meanwhile, the “Air Force City’s” celebration will be at Centennial park in Trenton with similar displays, as well as a child ID clinic and musical entertainment.
Both events will have fireworks, with Quinte West’s scheduled for 9:40 p.m. and Belleville’s happening at dusk.
Woman cleared in daughter’s death
Another local victim of a disgraced former child pathologist has been cleared of murdering her own baby.
Peterborough resident, Brenda Waudby, was this week cleared of any wrong-doing in the death of her 21-month-old daughter, charges that originated in the 1990s.
A story in the Peterborough Examiner says the crown issued an apology to Waudby for the years-long ordeal; aggrevated by inaccurate testimony given by former doctor, Charles Smith.
Former Belleville resident, Richard Brant, and Trenton resident, Sherry Sherret-Robinson, were each wrongfully convicted in the deaths of their respective children due to false testimony given by Smith.
Smith was stripped of his medical licence last year.
Lessard sentenced in death of QW man
The sentence has been handed down to a Tweed man for his role in the beating death of a man from Quinte West.
Chad Lessard was sentenced to 7 years in prison for killing Brian Stewart after an alcohol-fuelled drug-related fight last year.
A Sun Media report says Lessard accepted blame for Stewart’s death, and apologized to the victim’s family.
Along with the jail time, Lessard also receives a lifetime weapons ban.
Tanner scooped up by Halton
Police Chief Steve Tanner is moving on.
A story in the Kingston Whig Standard says Tanner announced this morning he’s leaving Kingston in September to become chief of the Halton Regional Police.
Tanner was the police chief in Belleville until late 2008, when he took the top job in Kingston.
He was awarded the national Order of Merit in May.
Peterborough doctor punished
A Peterborough doctor has been punished by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
Dr. John Gerard van Dorsser has been fined $3650 and will have restrictions imposed on his practice after a committee found him guilty of failing to maintain a professional standard.
In a document published today, the College’s discipline committee says van Dorsser mismanaged the distribution of narcotics like Demerol.
The G.P. will not be allowed to prescribe narcotics anymore and will have to post a sign at his Monaghan Rd. office stating he’s unable to prescribe narcotics.
Teens charged with firearms, traffic offences
Police have charged two young offenders with the theft of firearms from a Bancroft residence.
OPP say a 16-year-old boy from Bancroft and an 18-year-old girl from Belleville have been charged in Wednesday’s theft.
The two were identified by officers during a routine traffic stop in Madoc. Police say they were driving a stolen car.
They’ve each been charged and been given court dates.
