Stirling could become Hockeyville Tonight

Events are planned in Stirling today to mark the announcement of the winner of CBC’s Kraft Hockeyville Contest.

Stirling is in the Top 5 and is representing Ontario in the contest which provides the winner with $100,000 in arena upgrades… as well as an NHL pre-season game played in the area.

Events begin with a parade through the downtown at 2pm… and continue through the night at the Stirling Arena.


Summer activity sign up in PEC

There’s a chance to sign up for some fun summer-time activities in Prince Edward County today.

The municipality is holding registration for it’s summer sports … including baseball, ball hockey, soccer and more… as well as sign-up for camps at the Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Centre, Quinte Conservation and others.

Registrations takes place at the Wellington District Community Centre from 9am until 4pm today.

The W-D-C-C is located at 111 Belleville Street in Wellington.


Assault in Belleville

A tip to police led them to arrest an impaired out-of-towner overnight.

Belleville Police were told about a possible impaired driver pulling into a North Front Street drive-thru.

Officers responded and stopped a 27-year old driver.

The Ajax man was charged with having over 80 milligrams of alcohol in his blood and was later released on a promise to appear.


5 New cottages to come to East Lake

It appears the residents of Sandbanks Summer Village on East Lake will have some more new neighbours before long.

Prince Edward County council has tentatively approved a site plan agreement for a five-cottage development by Shore Club Holdings Limited.

The company has undergone resistance to the plan in the past.

Council approved the site plan as a committee of the whole on Thursday.

The site plan will need the final approval by council at its meeting on April 10.


Sweet weekend in Prince Edward County

Maple in the County has returned for another year.

This weekend’s festivities include maple treats galore at eight sugar shacks around Prince Edward County.

The festival is in its eleventh year and this month was named to Festivals and Events Ontario’s list of Top 100 for the fourth year in a row.

Events continue through tomorrow.


Belleville assault leads to arrest

A 53 year old woman is in custody after Belleville Police investigated an assault last night.

The altercation happened around 7:30pm at a home on Leslie Road just south of Roslin.

Police say a man at the home received minor injuries after the suspect allegedly hit him in the head with a beer bottle.

She’s been charged with assault with a weapon and three counts of breaching an undertaking… relating to similar charges.

She’s being held for a show-cause hearing.


Burn ban to start tomorrow in Centre Hastings

Starting tomorrow, there’s a partial outdoor burning ban in effect in Centre Hastings.

Outdoor burning won’t be allowed between the hours of 7 in the morning, and 7 in the evening.

Those caught burning could face charges and fines.

Some other municipalities in the area have total burn bans on because of the unusually dry weather.


Beaver control needed in Centre Hastings

A councillor in Centre Hastings doesn’t hate our national symbol, he just wishes there wasn’t so many of the critters around.

Councillor Larry Mitts says that despite continued efforts, the industrious beaver continues to cause flooding across the Trail of Two Lakes in the Crookston area of Centre Hastings.

Mitts told Centre Hastings council that this week that it might be a good idea to bring back humane trapping to control the beaver population


Fire damages Bloomfield factory

Crews are on the scene of a structure fire in Bloomfield.

Fire crews from three districts of Prince Edward County responded to the Universal Fan & Blower factory during the lunch hour. It took them about an hour to get the fire under control and crews are still on the scene of the Stanley Street building to ensure there are no flare-ups.

No one was injured. The cause is unknown at this time.


Ember sparks fire in Murray ward

A small grass fire cause some alarm for one resident in Murray ward.

Quinte West crews responded to the blaze early this afternoon.

The fire chief says the fire started when the Fraser Road resident emptied out a load of ashes from their wood stove and a live ember caught some dry grass.

No one was injured and the fire was quickly put out.
