Myles Hughes has received his sentence for his role in the fatal shooting of man at a Belleville house party in 2010.
The judgement came down today at the Hastings County Courthouse, where Justice Robert Scott gave Hughes a nine year sentence for manslaughter, aggravated assault, and weapons charges.
With time served, Hughes will receive a seven year sentence.
Justice Scott told the court “prison does not equate retribution for Mays death”, and “the necessary intent for murder was not there”.
He did add that illegal guns, especially with young men, can often lead to disaster.
On Saint Patrick’s Day 2010, Roy Mays Junior and his cousin Justin Coughlin were shot at a Victoria Street party.
Mays died later that night.

intent is automatically a given, once that finger enters the trigger guard.
in order to legal posses fire arms you have to take gun courses as mandated by the government pass record checks. at gun courses, there you will learn things like once the bullet leaves the gun it is to late to assume anything about that bullet. once your finger enters that guard and the trigger is squeezed you can’t undue what happens afterwards. you better be as sure as you can be what will happen between the muzzle of the gun and the impact point or the overall bullet terminal range. and that you are the only one that can be accountable for that projectile once the primer has ignited the cartridge.
we need to change laws in regards to what is an illegal gun.
carrying a gun illegally is automatic intent to cause harm.
just another case that proves judges are out of touch with the penal requirement for society.
take a mans life with out knowing the consequences of that action of pulling the trigger makes you stupid, but it seems to get you off the hook for murder with intent.
9 years for killing a man that’s it? where is the justice, oh ya sucking up the big pay checks behind the big bench and in their big houses out of touch with reality and the real society.
gun + shooting should be automatic 25years
gun plus any crime 20years
that should be enough of a deterrent after the first few get caught to stem this wanna be gang bangers, guys with small ego that they compensate by using a gun as intimidation.
shame, it’s a shame that mayors let this happen in their towns, and the cops know basically what is the point, and the judges don’t grasp consequences for bad actions.
this is why legal gun ownership has to deal with fighting to keep their guns the judges don’t understand the lack of punishment for action to create deterrence.
if the guy got 9 years total how much did he get for the gun offenses so in reality he got less than 9 for gunning down an unarmed person and a few months for gun offenses.
A hand gun is an illegal gun if it has not been registered. if it is being transported in any method or form with out a government authorization to do so. and if it is not locked up and secured. and if it is loaded anyplace other than a legit firing range or a make shift range.
Illegal gun found on ones possession as I said before has no other intent than to be shot at a range. So one can surmise that if a gun is found anywhere other than a range it has one intent to be used as a weapon that is capable of killing. and that is attempted murder, regardless if there is an intended victim or not.
who can say in court that well i only meant to scare him, or i didn’t know it would kill him. it all comes back to training. no training, no excuse.
being found by police with an illegal gun as mentioned above should be an automatic 10 years. intent to cause bodily harm.
it is that solution or we become like americans and we all carry guns that way criminals will think twice before pulling a gun on the public or their could be a flash mob jury of 12 pulling a gun on the suspect.
BYE BYE……….
wow what a justice system take a live and only give up 9 or less of yours not a fair trade off but at least he got that
Nine years? NINE YEARS? That’s it?!?!?!?!?
What a joke of a sentence. Way to send a message there Judge Scott. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. In just 7 years we will have this convicted scumbag walking the streets. Great. Thanks Judge Scott. You make us all feel so safe and secure.
We need to start voting for our judges and prosecutors like they do in the states.
Well.. it is not what we all feel to be the appropriate sentence.. however now the May’s family can lightly change the page in their book of life and focus on their future’s, knowing that now Roy can finally rest… I hope Justin can see through this and live his life to the fullest. . and not allow the sentence for someone nearly killing him as well, detear who he is and who he will become
I think 9 years is a good sentance for someone who didn’t go out with the intent to kill someone. Perhaps he will take his time in prison and think about his actions and when he is released work with the local community and educate the young wanna be gangsters about guns and consequence.
why is everyone complaining about his sentence? a half dozen “thugs” busted into his house assaulting him and all his guests and he shot them in self defence. Did he go too far by shooting them? Yes, probably, but does it warrant a longer jail term than the 7 years? Probably not. I think the Judge was correct in his sentence. In Florida there is a “Stand your ground” law, he wouldnt have done ANY jail time for this, claiming it under self defence. In the USA in most states he probably would not be getting jail time for this. If a half dozen guys busted through my door swinging fists, damn right I would be ready to pull a gun on them too! Not to mention the guys that were with the “victim” that night were mostly guys that had criminal pasts for assaults and assault causing bodily harm! I think its terrible someone had to die, but this victim was ready to cause death to mr hughes and his guests judging by witness evidence. In the USA its called Self Defence, and I think the manslaughter charge and 7 year sentence was appropriate, and harsh enough.
What I really don’t like is that he gets 2 years time served for living at home in his comfortable house…under house arrest you have to be kidding me 9 years minus the 2 years he got to spend with his family..that is just more of a slap in the face for Roy’s family…hope that karma plays a role in the big house he lives in for the next few years!! Sorry to the Mays family for our justice system your family deserved to hear a better sentence then that :(
@ the truth – please don’t compare to the US. You’re comparing apples to watermelon.
Hey If I had guys trying to run up on me in my own home they wouldn’t be walking out. I wouldn’t have shot and killed them unless they were shooting at me but they wouldn’t be walking out.
@ numbnuts…. ok fair enough, we wont compare usa and canada, but tell me what would you do if 5 guys broke into your house like that swinging fists at everyone in their path with the intent to cause bodily harm? and these werent small guys. these were guys that have a record of putting the guys they beat up in the hospital. And dont tell me “oh well I would’ve called the cops!” because by the time the cops got there you’d have been in a coma. The bottom line is, I dont think what Mr Hughes did was right, taking another persons life is a terrible thing, BUT in this case I do think the punishment he got (the 9 year sentence) was fair, as he should not spend life behind bars for reacting that way when his very own life was in danger that night.
