A proposed Methadone Treatment Centre for Bancroft won’t get financial support from Hastings-Quinte Social Services.
The Social Services Committee has decided to take no action on a request for funding.
A staff report to the committee pointed to the “significant budget challenges” of the member municipalities and the provincial cap on discretionary spending.
Committee chair Mayor Bernice Jenkins of Bancroft says the methadone treatment is “an unknown” for many people and “perhaps could be looked at next year.”

Methadone programs are “unknown” to Bancroft and surrounding area because most people on the pills there are able to get legit scripts (I used to run with the drug crowd there) and 9 times outta 10 the people developing addictions have no problem with it because its a script so they don’t feel they’re doing anything wrong…and the people that do buy them off the street haven’t been educated in any way about pills and how serious the addiction can get. When I attended school in Bancroft there was an OPP drug info session with middle school students each year, but the info centered around marijuana, alcohol, and at the time temporary tattoos that people were spiking with LSD and giving to children n teens, we NEVER learned about pills Sadly my generation is one of the worst for pills and “easy highs” such as “huffing” etc . I went cold turkey off large quantities of morphine on a whim as a teen and almost killed myself in the process… but I did it, so I know it is absolutely possible to quit without methadone, however it is dangerous, and that’s what the methadone program is here for… to help remove danger and dependency from the equation. Unfortunately, methadone is physically addictive as well, it simply doesn’t get you high and is a legal way to avoid with drawl from the actual drugs… I truly feel for the people getting off methadone though, its a brand new addiction in itself and you go through almost as intense with drawls from it as you would from pills.
No problem…the government will just give them money for a cab ride to Belleville..
It’s highly irresponsible for them to turn their backs on Methadone Clinics. It’s a proven, effective and safe method of treating drug addiction. As someone who is currently on Methadone daily, I can say that -
A) It doesn’t get a person high at all, so it is not a “legal way to get high”.
B) It helps to pull drug addicts out of their dangerous, destructive circle by giving them a safe and consistent avenue of avoiding withdrawals and thereby reduces their need to roam the streets looking for their next hit or stealing.
C) It helps them to become productive members of society, people on Methadone are able to work and look after their families like anybody else.
Every time I hear politicians & hicks spouting ignorant stereotypes or myths I just shake my head. It’s almost always out of ignorance that people are opposed to Methadone Clinics.
