Quinte West’s public works committee has agreed with the City of Belleville, and has recommended a speed limit change on Wallbridge Loyalist Rd.
The change would see the speed limit set at 60 km/h from the 401 south to old highway 2.
Meanwhile, work continues on traffic lights and warning signals at the intersection of W. Moira St. and Wallbridge Loyalist Rd.

I’m betting the cops will be running radar on that stretch of road a lot, because no one will be travelling at 60 km/h there. It will be a good revenue generator.
There have been far to many accidents over recent years in this area. I can’t help but wonder if a traffic circle would have been a better idea.
60 kph zone here, is a change for the better.
Like TM said, Unless they have police sitting on the road all the time, the speed change means nothing. People aren’t going to change their driving habits with a speed change. Traffic lights are the only thing that will force it when they get accustom to stopping
@TM – It requires voluntary contributions to be a good revenue generator. Sings are posted, we all know what they look like.
Most of those accidents occur when people roll through the Moira St stop sign, or are in a rush and pull out in front of oncoming traffic. People won’t slow down, just like they haven’t slowed down in the 60 zone north of the 401.
@Grahams – Wallbridge-Loyalist Rd is a rural road and 80 km/h is a reasonable speed limit for it. The Moira St/ CN rail overpass intersection does require some special attention on behalf of drivers who use it, but to drop the speed limit on the entire section of road is just plain stupid IMHO. It would have made more sense to see what effect the soon to be installed traffic lights would have on accident stats before dropping speed limits.
And yes I know what speed limit signs look like, and will travel at that exact limit from now on, which will annoy anyone who happens to be behind me on the road!
Golden oldies rejoice you can now drive as slow as you want to pretty much everywhere…why don’t we bring highway 2 down to 60 as well you know all those houses. If all the old people in this area had their way everyone would drive 50 everywhere, all the stores would be closed on Sundays and we’d all have to go to bed at 8. Let’s just give this entire area up to the baby boomers and let them ruin it all.
@TM – I don’t consider south of the 401 on wallbridge rural anymore. A major education establishment with thousands traveling to and from each day, a school with hundreds of kids, businesses and homes north of the college. How rural is this area?
@Grahams: It’s just as rural as Moira St West and Blessington Road (wasn’t there an accident there lately?). You may want to lobby for a 60km/h limit on those roads too.
There is a traffic light at the entrance to Loyalist College; and a reduced speed limit in front of the Christian High School during school hours – so how is a 60 km/h limit on the entire section of Wallbridge-Loyalist rd going to improve safety and access to these schools?
I see a correction in today’s Intell (http://www.intelligencer.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=3531683? ) that Belleville City council passed a motion to leave speed limits on Wallbridge Rd as they are. Finally some common sense from City Hall!
