3PM UPDATE: One person has died in the collision.
The public is advised the south end of Belleville’s Sidney St. will be closed for a while.
City police are on the scene of a collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle, which also set off a nearby fire hydrant.
Public Works has cleared the scene on Dundas at Sidney, where flooding from the fire-hydrant was spilling into oncoming traffic.
Police are allowing no pedestrians near the scene and if drivers live nearby, they’re being asked to park their cars elsewhere.
Sidney St. will be closed between Dundas and Bridge Streets until further notice.

people need to slow down!! it’s disgusting how people drive on that road it is not 80km/hr it is 50 slow the down (comments removed).
I drove by when the ambulance sped off. Water everywhere. I can not believe how many drivers go nuts on that stretch of Sidney. The yield should also change to a stop sign, due to the fact that there is a school RIGHT THERE!
This gentleman served our community for many years, this is a terrible tragedy for our entire west end community. THis is adevasting loss for our community.
So very sad to hear. We drive and walk by this corner everyday on our way home and I just saw this same gentleman (crossing guard) on Wednesday and gave him a little wave. He was just doing his job, and was there to facilitate and protect our little ones and guide the public safely across the street. Perhaps some changes will come out of this, so that it never again has to happen to anyone anywhere.
God rest his poor sweet soul.
It is unreal how fast people drive on Sidney. It needs to be patrolled better. A 3-way stop is a great idea for that intersection. There also needs to be a crosswalk installed near Giant Tiger/Shoppers Drug Mart, I am suprised no one has been injured there, it seems to far for people to go to the lights to cross the road!
