Mayor Peter Mertens has said his municipality needs to generate more revenue. How much of its budget should Prince Edward County council spend on economic development?
(Please leave your comment below.)

The expenditures in the County have risen over the past 10 years at a rate that is not in keeping with the population level which has stayed very constant. Property taxes have soared in order to allow the spending to continue. County residents deserve better.
The municipality can always make some revenue by putting up some wind mills ….
We’ve been in the County for 10 years and our property taxes have doubled! Enough is enough! We now have to pay $5 per bag to TAKE our garbage to the dump, we have no services (we are on a well & septic). Pretty soon the only people in the County are going to be the tourists, because those of us that currently reside in their aren’t going to be able to afford it! Council is too big (they’ve ignored what the voters wanted), they have voted themselves a payraise, but then want to freeze municipal worker pay, and Mayor Mertens says in hindsight, we shouldn’t have keep the tax increase so low last year because we are paying for it now. What a joke!
PEC needs to Tax all tourist related business. And give the residents a brake.
Put a large Tax on the wine industry. I.E Tax the rich.
There is a great deal of B.S. the resident have to tolerate. For the sake of
Tourist driven business Tax them all.
Make all bicycle tourist buy permit to ride PEC. They are the biggest Road Hazard
In all of PEC. Maybe this would reduce this two wheeled traffic.
Most two wheeled riders I have incountered have been nothing but inconsiderate
and seem to think that it is OK to ride three abreast on any secondary road.
I have left PEC and will never return. Because of the taxes and the tourism.
When you live and raise your children in PEC and there is no employment other than
tourism. And for most who cannot afford $300. or more per month in property taxes to live in your own home.
And still have to torerate all the B.S. that tourism brings to PEC.
I hope PEC gets a real eye opener with the economy the way it is.
Gas prices on the rise I would dare to say tourism well be down by at least 40%
for the summer of 2012.
GOOD LUCK PEC. Your getting what you voted for.
The County is a paradise only to those who are thick through the wallet!! The group around the horseshoe with the thick skulls ruined future economic development when they discontinued the great Dan “the MAN” Taylor!! Taylor, with help of course, was putting the County on the map and building the “creative rural economy” and it was going to pay off slowly but steadily!!
But NO!!! Muttonheads on council, longingly gazing in the rear view mirror to see Jed Clampett killing oil wells and Dan’l Boone shooting coyotes at will, decided to cut the budget and can the greatest economic development officer in this area.
Peterborough’s gain is the County’s, nay, the REGION’s loss!
Get this sweeties, Canada doesn’t have factories anymore, and the County ain’t where they’re going anyway. Much better locations for industry, Quinte West and Belleville, are on their knees begging for minimum wage call center jobs. Here’s the way it is!! The County can’t afford itself. With Taylor’s vision and salemanship, there would have been more business revenue coming in. There would have been hope for a creative BOOM!! But now, thanks to the !@#%@# heads on council, all there is GLOOM!!!
All we need to do is cut the OPP budget by 1/2 and we will have all we need!
I have news for you all, you blame the county council, you blame tourism. You all are the problem. You won’t allow county council to try and follow through with decisions in order to save money for taxpayers. Instead you insist that ‘heritage’ buildings, most of which are decrepid and falling apart, be funded and kept as municipal property. You deny businesses to use the land that is available to them like this recent issue with the explorenet tower. You constantly shoot down any new idea for good business, no wonder no one wants to open a business in the county. There is so much red tape and fuss that its nearly impossible to start anything other than a tourism spot.
Quit blaming it on other people and start letting go of some of the crap that is turning the county into a piece of garbage. You bitch and moan about these tourism locations and say they should be taxed? They are the only damn thing keeping you from paying even more in taxes right now. Stop shooting down every single new idea the council brings to light, stop bitching becuase a small piece of land needs to be used for a tower or a business. The county is enormous with plenty of beauty. Enough so that there is room for some business as well, and that will supply you all with the money needed to lower taxes. The council is only doing what they have been elected to do and that is deal with the hand they’ve been dealt, and lately you the people of the county ‘the dealers’ have been dealing crap hands.
