Money’s tight at school board

Posted 1 year ago

Tue, Apr 24th, '12 - 10:32 am

The financial picture isn’t getting any better for the Hastings Prince Edward School Board.

A report to last night’s board meeting shows a 3 million dollar deficit in the operations budget.

Continuing enrollment declines will put more financial pressure on the board in the near future.

Meanwhile, a resource center for teachers, located in the William R. Kirk building, will be closed as a cost cutting measure, and board administration warns there’ll have to be more cuts going forward.

How about the higher ups take a pay cut? School board officials need to look in the mirror and set an example.

Most of the school board – administrators and teachers – are on the “sunshine list”. Money’s apparently not that tight!!

Actually most of the teachers are not on the sunshine list. The majority of those listed are school board officials and principals. Have you attended a parent council meeting at your child’s school? Ever sat in on a day of class or volunteered for any school functions? A principals duties involve far more than discipline. They have to look over every single report card and advise changes in comments, sign them, they budget and attend many meetings. Every fundraising, school lunch program, and trip goes through them. Have you looked at the new healthy food guidelines implemented for Ontario schools? A day at the office far extends the school day of our kids. Principals, teachers and EA’s deserve far more credit than what they are given. I personally want to thank all the teachers at College St. Public School for what they do for my kids every single day!

So much resentment of people who find their way onto the sunshine list in Quite. Belleville will never be more than a blue-collar, low-income town as long as this attitude is prevalent in the city/region.

Most teachers are on the sunshine list?? You apparently don’t know how many teachers there are in our district, because there are actually very few teachers on that list. Teachers work incredibly hard for their pay, and “most” teachers are earning less than you’d think. They have degrees, and are continually updating their own education, work after hours on a regular basis and deal with an incredible amount of stress and pressure – they are responsible for the education (and behaviour, and character, and on and on and on…) of our children! Before you start talking about teachers and their salaries, please volunteer in a classroom.

I’m not jealous of the high paid school board officials. I do understand however that my tax dollars go to pay these people (same people who are asking for others to make cuts).
There are too many school boards across Ontario, and too many high paid officials representing these boards.
Kids need education, not school board officials.

I’ll say it again. The question is WHY are we increasing the money (decreasing everyone else’s pocket) for a system that is failing in the first place! Nothing’s going to change, the officials the people above are talking about will decide the blow the money on something they seem fit. New gym floor maybe, waxing machines. Stupid irrelevant crap to keep a crappy system working craptacular!

We need to change our schooling system and step away from this old-age, industrial learning “camp” image. Haven’t our minds evolved since the 30′s? Then WHY has nothing but the content and dicipline changed for schooling since then?
