One person has died following a collision on Sidney St.
Belleville Police say the south end of Sidney St. will be completely closed for another 3-4 hours for the investigation.
The city of Belleville issued a press release last hour stating that a city employee suffered fatal injuries in the collision and the Ministry of Labour has been notified.
A witness at nearby Albert College says the victim was a city crossing guard.

I would like to take a moment and grieve this guards life and the reckless loss of it. However, this was bound to happen along Sidney street sooner or later. Few drivers seem to consider the numerous schools, volume of pedestrians and the number of businesses in the area. They speed down this stretch way in excess of the 50 mph limit and it is rarely monitored. I just hope this was an honest accident and that this life wasn’t lost because of a text messages overwhelming importance or the need to get where they were going those couple minutes quicker.
There is no reason for a crossing guard to get hit, and then the car is going fast enough to hit a fire hydrant. Should be big charges to that driver. Those guards are there to protect our children, hope the driver get a long jail term!
So very sad, my condolences to the family.
Not surprising – on College Street West this afternoon I saw a car drive straight past a school bus stopped with its lights flashing. In excess of the speed limit too.
But as long as we have a weak police department with a weak administration that is afraid to enforce the traffic laws, people will die on the roads and on the sidewalks. Deepest sympathy to family of crossing guard.
So sad and probably completely avoidable. Husband and I have both seen people speeding, weaving, driving badly on that street. But also, how about parking lots? Diagonal driving, at speed, with no thought or care. No thought about kids, older people, younger people, anyone. Seriously, how urgent is it that you get to Shoppers DrugMart? Viagra wearing off? You know who you are.
Well put, john doe.
Very unfortunate. Such a tragic waste.
There is absolutely NO reason a vehicle should be within a crosswalk while a pedestrian is there. Distraction is not an excuse or reason. There is a speed limit, a cross-walk, crossing signs and a crossing guard. Throw the book at this driver. Loss of license etc. It is very common in this area for drivers to ignore pedestrians while in the crossing or intersection. Our heart goes out to the family of the deceased.
How very tragic. Very sorry for this persons family.
Most crossing guards I ever knew from going to school were very kind folks.
