4am update: Dead are 23 year old Korin Howes of Belleville and 23 year old Shaina Harrison of Oshawa. Howes was driving a small car the wrong way on the 401 eastbound. Both of the deceased are female.
4:30 UPDATE: OPP say the highway has reopened.
Police are searching for clues that might help explain why a driver was headed in the wrong direction this morning on highway 401.
The suspect struck another vehicle in the oncoming lane, killing both drivers at the scene.
OPP describe the suspect vehicle as a red, 2-door Hyundai Accent, which was going westbound in the eastbound lanes at 9:45 this morning.
Police are withholding the names of the deceased pending the notification of next of kin.
The eastbound lanes of the 401 at Trenton are not expected to reopen until this evening.
was goin to belleville, couldn’t get on the 401 east, came back around 12-12:30, got on 401 west for 10-15 minutes and saw 2 cars totalled and not a single car on the 401 east from trenton til belleville! people need to slow down and cops need to lack off with the donuts and start watchin the 401!
If you listened to the local radio, you would have known that some idiot got on the off ramp and was going west in the east bound lanes. You can’t really blame the police or speed on this one buddy!
Thats uncalled for! That stretch of highway is covered by Napanee OPP not Quinte west! Quinte west only starts at Trenton! It’s a huge stretch of highway to cover! Maybe if people would slow down and get off their damn phones that would make everyone’s lives easier and safer! (I’m not suggesting anyone in the accident today was on their phone)
Cody if you’d like to be responsible for taking care of the large percentage of taxes it would cost to hire more police officers in order to patrol the entire line of the 401 please be my guest, otherwise stop bad mouthing the police. They are not mind readers, they can’t see into the future and they certainly cannot be everywhere at once. Maybe you should go on a ride along and see how much donut eating they actually do you douche.

why would the girl be going the wrong way in the first place how does police have anything to do with THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Understand and agree that closing the 401 is required for these accidents, but why is there no police help available to direct traffic at busy intersections? I think we need plans put into place to facilitate the movement of traffic during these events.
I am in shock that this Korin Howes drove as far as she did the wroong way. Sadly I think that she decided to commit suicide that dayand took out someone else with her. OR was under some kind of drug.
This woman was from Belleville and attented Loyalist College herself at one time I am sure she knew the ramp and even if she did not I would think that she would have realized quite quickly that she was going the wrong way!
what was she doing going the wrong way anyways? does anyone know yet? suicide, drinking?
You’d have to be on a suicide mission to drive the wrong way on the 401 in the town you live in. That’s fine, KILL yourself. You don’t have to take someone else with you! She was an innocent girl on her way to school!
well now we know she was at the Angry Beaver on Wallbridge-Loyalist road and got on the highway just after she left. So either she was drunk, exhausted or both. Any bar that is open that long all night, even for a Superbowl party is a dangerous place to the public, as we now see here. The person she hit could have been any one of us.
