Another fatal crash in Prince Edward County

The last week of 2012 has been a deadly one on the roads of Prince Edward County.

Prince Edward OPP say two cars were involved in a crash on Loyalist Parkway near North Beach road just after 8:30 PM on Christmas Eve.

Investigators say a car lost control and slid into the path of an oncoming pick up.

24 year old Justin Mowbray of Demorestville died as a result of the collision.

Authorities are continuing to investigate.

The crash is the second fatal on County roads in the last week

A 56 year old woman was killed on Highway 62 on Friday evening.


OPP concerned about County driving habits

There is a growing concern among Prince Edward OPP officers regarding driving habits in the County.

In the past two months there have been five motor vehicle accidents causing death

Aside from the two in the last week, a cyclist was struck and killed in Bloomfield in October.

While in November, a speeding car left a roadway and struck a tree.

And later in November a driver was killed when he lost control on a slippery road.

Prince Edward County OPP are appealing to motorists to drive sober and reflect upon their driving habits to help prevent accidents.


Bulls’ Gaunce named OHL player of the week

Belleville Bulls captain Brendan Gaunce will enter 2013 as the reigning OHL player of the week.

The Markham native received the honour from the league today, after notching five points in two games last weekend and helping the Bulls to a pair of wins.

The Vancouver draft pick was named first star in both of the Bulls’ last two games, and has 12 goals and 11 assists on the season.


OPP: Impaired man not to blame for crash

Prince Edward OPP are trying to remove blame from a man that’s been charged in a fatal accident in the county.

On Friday night, a driver traveling southbound on Highway 62, crossed the median, hitting a car head on, before hitting another vehicle.

A 56 year old Ameliasburgh woman was killed.

One of the drivers involved in the accident, a 60 year old also from Ameliasburgh, was charged with impaired driving, but according to Constable Kim Guthrie he isn’t at fault.

Guthrie says pathology tests are underway on the deceased to try and determine a cause.

Sixty year old Matt Cottrell has been charged with Impaired Driving.


Belleville construction stats out

Not a whole lot of construction activity in Belleville in December.

29 permits were issued, with a construction value of just over $2.9 million.

That’s down from over $4 million  in construction value during December 2011.

Year to date construction values came in at almost $54 million, but that’s way down from last year’s total, at over $153 million.

Last year’s inflated numbers were mainly due to construction at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre and Belleville General Hospital.


Rider rescued from Presque’ile Bay

Ice has barely formed on area waterways and emergency crews have already had to rescue one snowmobile rider from a scary situation.

Northumberland OPP were called late last night after a woman reported seeing a snowmobile on Presqu’ile Bay and she lost sight of the vehicle.

A man could then be heard yelling and was seen crawling across the ice.

He was monitored from shore and eventually rescued by members of the Quinte West Fire Department.

Police say there were no significant injuries but they remind everyone to be sure about ice conditions before you venture off-shore.


Impaired charges laid after single car crash

A 21 year old from the county has been charged after an early morning accident yesterday.

County OPP were called to County Road Three, west of Rossmore, after a vehicle left the roadway, slamming into several trees.

Thankfully the driver wasn’t injured.

Officers say there was an alcohol odor coming off the driver.

Caleb Murray has been charged with impaired operation and will have a court date in Picton on January 16th.


Pepper spray used again in Belleville assault

There’s been another incident in Belleville involving pepper spray.

Just before 6:00 last night, police were called to the southwest part of the city, where two groups of men were involved in a confrontation.

Belleville police say suspects had both pepper spray and knives.

28 year old Kenneth Felker and 21 year old Kevin Hazell of Belleville has been charged and were held overnight.

They will have court dates at the end of January.


Protests stall Via trains across the province

Passengers on board Via Rail trains running between Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal got delayed for several hours last night.

Demonstrators trying to draw attention to First Nations issues blockaded the main rail line near Marysville.

The protest ended peacefully after several hours, but passenger trains were stuck for several hours.

Via Rail says about 2,500 passengers were affected.


Busy night expected for Operation Red Nose

It could be the busiest night of the year for Operation Red Nose Quinte.

Tonight is the final night the program will run this holiday season.

Drivers will go as far as Madoc, Brighton, Deseronto and Wellington, as long as the trip starts or finishes in Belleville or Trenton.

Spokesperson Mark Rashotte says it’s expected to be non-stop throughout the night.
