Watch out: tricky ice on small creeks

Quinte Conservation officials have issued an advisory that milder temperatures could cause some flooding of smaller creeks and ditches in the southern part of their watersheds.
Quinte Conservation spokesman Bryon Keene explains that southern areas of the watershed will experience some runoff, but it won’t reach spring conditions. Larger rivers will not be affected. Colder evening temperatures will slow the runoff somewhat. Keene says ice conditions will be unstable and shorelines will be slippery. He encourages caregivers to be vigilant as the days are now longer and more children will be outdoors playing.
Welding spark causes fire
A spark from welding equipment gets the blame for the fire that destroyed a garage in Prince Edward County.
Firefighters responded late last night to the blaze on South Big Island Road on Big Island. Fire Chief Scott Manlowe says the garage owner was working in the building when the fire started. No one was hurt.
Power outages in Quinte
Lots of Quinte area residents with no electricity today.
The largest outage, effecting over 53-hundred homes, stretches from Wooler to Hastings, including Codrington. Hydro One crews are working on the problem, and hope to have servcie restored by mid-afternoon. Other smaller outages are also scattered around the local area.
Lots of rain followed by cold
There could be quite a sheet of ice throughout the Quinte area tomorrow.
An official at the weather office at C-F-B Trenton says 17.4 millimetres of rain fell this morning, but little accumulation is expected this afternoon. However, surfaces are expected to ice up tonight with the thermometer expected to dip into the negative double digits.
Coyotes On The Prowl In Trenton
Quinte West O-P-P say they’ve received numerous reports of Coyotes running loose within the town boundaries of Trenton.
Police say 6 complaints have come in this month… and the animals have been spotted on Dufferin Street, Stanley Street, Marmora Street, and Loraine Avenue.
Animal Control and the Ministry of Natural Resources are aware of the sightings… and are asking anyone who see the animals to not approach them…. and report the sighting to O-P-P.
New Traffic Lights To Be Activated Today
Drivers on College street should be prepared to hit the brakes more often starting this afternoon.
The City of Belleville will be activating two new sets of Traffic lights around 4pm.
The new lights are at the intersections of College Street and Lemoine… and College and Heartwood Drive.
Another charge laid against Stirling man
Another charge of impaired driving causing bodily harm has been laid against a Stirling man.
Twenty-two-year-old Jesse Degasperis was originally charged by Stirling-Rawdon Township Police with three counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm after five people were injured in a head-on crash on Ridge Road, east of Stirling on February 12th. Further investigation has led to the fourth charge being laid.
BVPS Lay Impaired Driving Charges
A Bowmanville man… and a man from Tyendinaga Township both face impaired driving charges after being stopped by Belleville police overnight Saturday.
An officer made the first stop just before midnight… when he saw a car drive over a curb while exiting a parking lot onto North Front Street.
23 year old Ryan Wood of Bowmanville was charged with over 80 milligrams.
Meanwhile just after 3am… an off-duty officer reported a possible drunk driver on Belleview Drive.
The car was stopped near Millennium Parkway and highway 62… and 30 year old Ryan McMechan of Tyendinaga Township was charged.
Both men will appear in court in late march.
Drug Charges Laid In Belleville
A pair of drug charges laid on Friday night in Belleville.
Police responded to a driving complaint on Pine Street around 8pm.
They stopped the car in question near Pine street and Bleeker… and after investigating… 28 year old Leo Quinlan was charged with one count of possession. Meanwhile… 2 hours later… officers were dispatched to Front Street where a man was hunched over on the sidewalk and unable to get up.
Police investigated and charged 38 year old James Wilson with possession as Well.
Both men will appear in court on March 31st.
Belleville man sentenced in Peterborough
A 34-year-old Belleville man charged in Peterborough with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking has been sentenced to house arrest.
Jeremy Villeneuve was arrested by the O-P-P on November eleventh in a car sitting on the shoulder of Highway 115 with its four-way lights flashing. Police found a 14-gram piece of crack cocaine in Villeneuve’s pocket, and also six grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia such as rolling papers. Villeneuve will be on house arrest for six months, to be followed by two months with a 6 pm to 6 am curfew. He must also provide a sample to the National D-N-A Data Bank, and will have a ten year weapons prohibition.
