Task Force Canuck to land in Trenton

5PM UPDATE: All combat operations have ended for Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.
Members of Task Force Canuck landed in a Hercules aircraft at CFB Trenton this afternoon.
The small group of remaining military personnel was greeted mostly by other members of the military and media. Also on hand were Gen. Walter Natynczuk and Defence Minister, Peter MacKay.
Training operations will continue in Kandahar.
Task Force Canuck flies into CFB Trenton this hour.
The last remaining Canadian Hercules aircraft departed Kandahar on November 17th after 10 years of continuous service in support of coalition forces in Afghanistan.
Officials say it’s a big milestone as it marks the close-out of the longest continuous tactical airlift operation in the Royal Canadian Air Force history.
The Herc and the personnel aboard it have made several international stops of goodwill en route to Trenton.
Their arrival marks the end of Canada’s combat operations in Afghanistan.
Belleville man wins $50,000
A Belleville man is $50,000 richer after picking up his cheque from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.
Fred Powe won the jackpot on an Instant Crossword ticket.
He says he was happy enought to win $5000 and was even happier when he realized it was ten times that amount.
The 49-year-old husband and father of four plans to pay some bills and have a great Christmas with his family.
The winning ticket was purchased at John’s Variety Store on Station St.
Quinte West property dispute goes to court
A Toronto-area landlord will see his day in court with the city of Quinte West.
The city has been asking Shakeel Balroop to clean up his properties in downtown Trenton and yesterday it was decided the two parties will settle the matter in court.
The properties have been a point of contention for a while now.
A pre-trial is set for January 2012.
Drugs seized in police traffic stop
Driving around without a valid license can lead to more trouble than one might bargain for.
Belleville police stopped a vehicle being driven by someone with a suspended license Monday.
While speaking with a woman, they noticed her throwing a couple of bags away.
The contents turned out to be a small amount of marijuana, pot oil, and drug paraphernalia.
Charged is 43 year old Joanne Faucher of Belleville.
Quinte West OPP calls for service down
Calls for service for the Quinte West OPP were down a bit for the month, compared to November of last year.
Quinte West OPP report receiving one thousand and 87 calls for service in November, down from 14 hundred and 47 calls last year.
Of the calls this November in Quinte West, 36 were for domestic disputes, and 9 for break and enter.
OPP investigated 94 accidents.
OLS job fairs continue in Quinte
The O-L-S job fair in Belleville opened it’s doors early this morning.
The P-E-I based company is holding fairs in Belleville and Quinte West to try and make a decision on which city they will set up their new call-centre in.
O-L-S Vice President of Human Resources, Kathy Follett-Lloyd, says the Quinte Region fits the O-L-S philosophy perfectly.
The Belleville O-L-S job fair runs until 8:00 tonight at the Recreation Centre on Pinncale Street.
The Quinte West Fair will be from 11am-8pm tomorrow at the Holiday Inn in Trenton.
Belleville council paring 2012 budget
Belleville City Council brought out the knives and began paring its 2012 budget at city hall yesterday.
In a day-long session council cut one-point-two-four million dollars from the $33,000,000 proposed capital budget. Most of that one-point-one million…came from trimming down the Tracey Street reconstruction to just the intersection work. The rest was proposed new sidewalks.
A couple of bridges made the cut the Cannifton Road bridge will be replaced as well as the pedestrian bridge in the downtown core. Budget deliberations continue today.
Belleville Budget Talks
A tense two-hour debate by Belleville City Council yesterday resulted in the approval of a one-point-five million dollar revitalization project in the downtown for next year.
During the capital budget deliberations, a bid by Councillor Jackie Denyes to have the Campbell Street upgrade…half the cost…approved only in principle, while the city tries for senior government funding, went down to defeat. In the end the project passed on an eight-to-one vote with Councillor Egerton Boyce voting against. There will still be two more public meetings on the plan before any action is taken.
Positive on Nuclear
Electricity means jobs. The Quinte Economic Development Commission is sending CEO Chris King to seminars next year on nuclear energy.
The aim is to find ways to get local industry involved in producing for the nuclear industry.
Meanwhile, yesterday, the Commission heard that the construction of the Darlington 2 nuclear plant will create 10 thousand good jobs for a 10 year period, starting in 2013.
That will be sure to create an economic boost in the Quinte region.
Upset Teenager
An angry teenager in Belleville yesterday
City police say a 17 year old boy was arrested at 2:30 in the afternoon and charged with assault, uttering death threats and assault with a weapon.
The charges stem from 2 separate assaults on an adult.
