Barnoski Murder Sentencing

The teenager convicted of shooting his Mother to death 2 years ago has been sentenced.
The 17 year old Warkworth boy was sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of parole for 7 years.
That time would include the time the teen has spent in prison already. He was charged about two weeks after his Mother, Michelle Barnoski, was found buried in her Warkworth backyard in June of 2008.


Brighton Public School construction contract

A Pickering company is expected to win the contract tonight to build the new Brighton Public School.

Kawartha-Pine Ridge School Board trustees will be asked to award the tender to Tasis Contractors, for just under eight-million dollars. The deal would be subject to Education Ministry approval. Part of the current school will be kept, but the rest of the building will be demolished after construction is done. The board will also discuss the honorarium payed to Trustees.


Ameliasburgh Fair Dedicated to Military

This year’s edition of the Ameliasburgh Fair is ready to go. Spokesman Roy Pennell says on Saturday morning the Base Commander 8-Wing Trenton Dave Cochrane will kick-off the fair…which has been dedicated to the men and women of CFB Trenton. The parade starts at 10am Saturday and everyone is asked to where red-and-white and bring a Canadian Flag. He says anyone dressed in their military uniform gets in for free all weekend.
The Ameliasburgh Fair…which is held at Roblin Lake…will have lots of entertainment, cattle and horse shows and lawn mower pulls.


Boaters found in Nunavut

Five missing boaters a C-130 Hercules airplane from C-F-B Trenton had been looking for in Nunavut have been found.

The Canadian Rangers, based out of Clyde River, located the five this morning along the shore of Clyde Inlet. They said the motor on their small boat had broken down late last night, and they camped out overnight. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at Eight Wing was contacted after the five, all from Clyde River, didn’t return from a day of boating in the Inlet. They were taken home by the Rangers.


Madoc Twp woman wants Centre Hastings

A Madoc Township woman wants her property to become part of the municipality of Centre Hastings.

Centre Hastings Council voted last night to have staff speak to township officials about Betty-Ann Wilman-Macauley’s request. She says she would be able to have municipal services offered by Centre Hastings if her land was part of that municipality. The property is southwest of the corner of McKenzie Street and Concession Road, just east of Madoc.


Teen Sentenced Today for Killing Mom

A teenage boy from Warkworth may learn his fate today for killing his mother more than two years ago. The now 17-year old boy was convicted of first degree murder in December of last year in the death of Michelle Barnoski. She was shot in the head and neck eight times and then buried in their backyard in May of 2008. Justice Alex Sosna heard arguments from the defence and the crown earlier this summer as tried to determine if the boy should be sentenced as a youth or an adult. The defence argued his client was just a kid who made a stupid mistake…while the Crown reminded the court that the boy loaded a .22 calibre rifle with 8 bullets…firing one into his mom’s neck…and, seven more into her head.


Toy Gun Threats in Downtown Belleville

A man is facing charges after a toy gun was used in a threatening manner in Downtown Belleville overnight. City Police were called to Front Street near City Hall, at 3:20 this morning, and a short foot chase ensued with a suspect. He was apprehended in a nearby parking lot. A 24 year old Belleville man is charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and uttering a death threat. He’s being held for a bail hearing this afternoon.


Record Crowd Expected at County Marathon

The 7th annual Prince Edward County Marathon is this weekend… and organizers expect another full roster of runners.
Race Director Mark Henry told our newsroom they expect 1500 runners by the time the starting gun sounds on Sunday.
The race route starts in Wellington and stretches through Sandbanks… and eventually ends in Picton.
Those who are running the half-marathon… will start in West Lake.
The PEC Marathon is a Boston Marathon Qualifier… and starts at 8am on Sunday.


Stirling-Rawdon Police-Fire Building Update

The police portion of the new police-fire building…under construction in Stirling-Rawdon…will be paid off before the end of the year. Chair of the Police Service Board Shawn LePalm says their installment of 650-thousand dollars will be paid off from the police record check fund in November.
The remaining 350-thousand dollars is coming from the fire reserve fund. The federal and provincial governments are funding two-thirds of the 3-million dollar project with money from the Infrastructure Stimulus Plan. Construction is expected to be complete in late November.


Picton child pornography sentence

A Picton man is prohibited from being around children under 16 for the next ten years for his conviction on possession of child pornography..

The prohibition given 25-year-old Joseph Grosse at his sentencing in Picton Provincial Court yesterday includes a ban on using a computer to communicate with children, and ten year restrictions on working or volunteering in positions, or attending places, where young people could be present. He was released after being given credit for 106 days pre-sentence custody, and is on probation three years. Grosse, who pled guilty to one count of possession of child porn on September first, was charged on June first after the O-P-P Child Sexual Exploitation section seized a number of computers and printed material containing images of child sexual abuse at a Picton home.
