New Rescue Boat in Brighton

A new rescue boat and motor is docked at the Presqu’ile Marina thanks to an Ontario Trillium Grant. MPP Lou Rinaldi presented the 11-thousand dollar grant to the Brighton Auxiliary Rescue Unit yesterday. Community Relations Officer Karen Duncan says the inshore rescue boat means they will no longer have to rely on the Cobourg unit for shallow water rescues.
Previously the Rescue Unit only had a 38-foot boat which was too large for some of the shallow areas.
Cooling station set up in Quinte West
You can beat the heat at City Hall in Quinte West.
Mayor John Williams says a “Cooling Station” has been set-up in the Council Chambers as temperatures around 30 degrees continue.
The Station, with free cold bottled water, will be open to the public until eight o’clock this evening, and from 8-30 until eight tomorrow..
Eldorado man dies on the job in Napanee
Police say they don’t suspect foul play in the death of a 39-year-old Eldorado man in a new home under construction in Napanee.
Fire crews and paramedics rushed to the house on Beverly Street on Saturday after a painting company contractor became concerned about an employee who didn’t return from a break.
He found the man, who appeared to have collapsed in a washroom in the partially completed house. He provided CPR, along with help from passersby, until emergency crews arrived. Anthony Pelley was rushed to hospital but later pronounced dead.
Clustering for local aerospace industry
It has worked in food processing and auto parts manufacturing, and clustering is the next focus for the Quinte area’s aerospace industry.
Quinte Economic Development Commission Chair Mitch Panciuk says companies at C-F-B Trenton involved in avionics, aeronautic and aerospace could work more closely together. The Q-E-D-C received 90-thousand dollars in federal funding and ten-thousand dollars in Trenval cash in June for the clustering project.
Panciuk also announced at yesterday’s commission meeting he will step down as the chair while he campaigns in the Belleville Mayoralty race.
Archive Facility Renovations Continue
The main renovations to the archives building in Belleville are still awaiting a provincial grant but work is underway on the documents themselves.
Officials need to know if provincial money is available before deciding how much more work will be undertaken. Meanwhile Director of Recreation Mark Fluhrer says archivist Sharon White is preparing the collection now stored at the Canifton building. White is cataloguing the permanent records of Belleville and Hastings county, and developing a management plan for the new facility. Last week Belleville City Council approved naming the building “Community Archives, City of Belleville, County of Hastings.”
Napanee Firefighters Update
Latest reports on the Napanee firefighters, injured in a bus accident in southwestern Ontario, indicate they are recovering well.
Town clerk Rebecca Murphy says Bill Pearson and Dave Goodfellow have been moved from the London Hospital and are now being treated at the Lennox and Addington General Hospital in Napanee. Murphy says both are doing well. Meanwhile Laurie Stewart, injured in the same accident, is expected to be discharged this week from a London hospital. The private funeral for the wife of firefighter Dave Goodfellow, Darlene Goodfellow, who was killed in the crash, will not be held for several weeks.
New Gig for Prince Edward Building Official
It’ll be a retirement party one day, and a “new job” celebration on the next day for the chief building official in Prince Edward County.
Garry Davis retires from the County position on September 17th, and will immediately join Cottage Advisors Canada as the Lead Project Manager for the 50 million dollar cottage development on East Lake.
Davis, who has 36 years experience in 4 municipal building departments, says he is proud to be chosen for the job, and will make hiring local construction contractors a priority. Construction will begin next month, and it’s hoped a model cottage will be ready in November.
Centre Hastings Councillor Seeks Re-Election
With seven years of municipal politics under her belt…Shelby Kramp-Neuman announced yesterday she’s seeking re-election to her Council seat in Centre Hastings. The young business woman and mother of two says she is dedicated to continue to provide a level of compassion, for the people of Centre Hastings.
Kramp Plays Santa in Bancroft
Prince Edward-Hastings MP Daryl Kramp was a popular politician in Bancroft yesterday. Kramp announced The Main Street Revitalization Program is getting 25-thousand dollars to fund the position of a “Special Events Coordinator” for a one-year contract. and, Kramp also delivered a 10-thousand dollar grant to assist the North Hastings Supported Housing Committee to expand their business plan for the proposed Living and Wellness Centre.
Serious Crash Halts Belleville Traffic
A woman was taken to Kingston General Hospital with serious injuries after a crash in east-end Belleville yesterday afternoon. The collision involving a Jeep Cherokee and full size car occurred on Dundas Street East near Old Kingston Road, just after 4 o’clock, and resulted in the closure of the eastbound lanes. Firefighters and paramedics extricated the woman from the car. There’s been no word yet on charges.
