Genereaux Leaves Chamber

There’s a shift atop the Belleville and District Chamber of Commerce.
President Kelly McKinney announced … C-E-O Angela Generaux will no longer serve on the Chamber.
The announcement came after a last-minute chamber meeting yesterday afternoon.
While specific details have not been released… Genereaux told media outlets she’s leaving due to health and personal reasons.
McKinney has said the same… telling media he couldn’t comment further on the issue.
Genereaux joined the Chamber in 2006 as General Manager… before being promoted to C-E-O.
Plans are in the works to fill the position.


Barcoven Tourney A Hit/Mills In The Hunt

The Barcoven Golf Club in Carrying Place held it’s Senior Men’s Invitational tournament yesterday.
Out of a field of 110 golfers… the low gross score belonged to Chris Hawkins of Garrison Golf Club in Kingston.
Barcoven’s own Cory Walraven carded a Low net of 64.
Meanwhile… Belleville’s Jon Mills has shaved 3 strokes off his first round score at the Cox Classic in Omaha Nebraska.
Mills fired a 2nd round 65… leaving him at 9-under… tied for 17th heading into today’s 3rd round.
Kyle Thompson leads the tourney with at 14-under.


More Suspicious Fire In Downtown Belleville

The Belleville Fire Department has dealt with yet another set of fishy fires in the city’s downtown core.
One fire official told out newsroom this morning.. crews had to put out more than one garbage fire downtown overnight.
It is the third time this week Belleville Firefighters have had to extinguish suspicious blazes in the city centre.
On Tuesday… authorities said lit cigarette buts were the cause of a garbage fire in the Victoria and Front Street area.
Then … suspected arsonists set a number of blue boxes ablaze in the same area Wednesday night.
Fire inspector Lyle Quennell who is investigating last night’s incident… and Wednesday’s incidents… is assuring the public…. those who are responsible will face charges when caught.


OPP Patrolling Roads

It’s another long weekend… and that means another crackdown on highway safety from Provincial Police.
The O-P-P Highway Safety Division will be out in full force over the next three days checking vigorously for aggressive drivers, drunk drivers, distracted drivers and many other violations under the highway traffic act.
But just because you might not be driving a car… doesn’t mean you can’t be charged.
Police say you can also be slapped with an aggressive driving or drunk driving charge if you’re operating a boat or an A-T-V unsafely as well.
Watercraft operators are also reminded to wear life jackets… and ask passengers do the same.. while out on the water.


Drugs Near Prison

The age old game of trying to get drugs into prisons continues.
Millhaven prison officials say 92 thousand dollars worth of marijuana and pills were found yesterday in a work location..outside of the institution.
An OPP investigation continues.


Construction Gung- Ho in County

It’s a busy year for building in Prince Edward County so far this year.
Chief Building Official Garry Davis says 69 building permits worth just over 4 million dollars were issued in July, and that compares to 3.85 million for July of last year.
So far this year, building activity worth 34.2 million dollars have been issued, and that’s a good deal more than the 26.6 million issued for the same period last year.


Election candidate in Tweed

There is finally a municipal election candidate in Tweed.

Lydia Vermeer filed her nominations papers today for one of three councillor positions in this October’s election.

She is the only councillor candidate so far, and there are no candidates for Reeve and Deputy-Reeve.


$$$ to cut hospital emergency wait times

Quinte Health Care will get another 95-thousand dollars under the expansion of a government program that gives hospital emergency rooms extra cash to reduce wait times.

The province will provide 100 million dollars to 25 E-Rs to help them track patient flow and hire nurse practitioners to help treat and discharge patients.

Quinte Health Care received 480-thousand dollars in June in an advance payment, to reduce wait times at the Belleville Hospital Emergency department, and has just learned it will get the additional 95-thousand under the same program.


Crystal Beach Resort Residents Frustrated

The permanent residents at Crystal Beach Resort near Madoc are growing increasingly frustrated about their situation.

Association Founding Secretary Linda Lavallee says Centre Hastings Reeve Tom Deline told the tenants last night there wasn’t a lot the municipality could do, but he would check other options. She also says the park owner doesn’t have to convert the facility to non-residential use after everyone is evicted next July, even though he claims that is why he wants the park vacated.

The tenants who live in about 50 homes year round also weren’t enthusiastic about a proposal from Hastings County they apply to live in low-rental housing in Madoc.


Charge laid over truck left on tracks

A Grafton-area man has been charged with leaving a vehicle that was hit on the C-N Railway tracks in Colborne.

The westbound freight train slammed into a pickup truck south of Earl Street early yesterday morning.. No one was in the abandoned vehicle, and there were no injuries among C-N employees on the train..

Northumberland O-P-P have charged 20-year-old Michael Behan of Alnwick-Haldimand Township with mischief endangering life. He was released from custody, and will appear in Cobourg court on September seventh.
