New twist to BGH fun run

A new twist to the Second Annual Fun Run aimed at buying equipment for Belleville General Hospital.
This year participants will have a chance to support the BGH Foundation as a well as a charity or organization of their choice….on a 50-50 basis. Chair Andrea diRocco-Supryka announced today all proceeds raised for the BGH Foundation will go toward providing the hospital with needed equipment. The event, co-sponsored by the Quinte Mall, will be held September 26.
Relay for Life in Trenton
Over 18-thousand dollars raised for cancer research at Saint Paul’s Secondary School in Trenton.
Spokesperson Joseph Murphy says 250 to 300 students, staff and volunteers participated in the 12-hour event last Friday, and more donations are still coming in.
Relay for Life involves walking, jogging and other forms of exercise. All proceeds go to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Serious assault in Madoc
A 45-year-old Frankford man has been charged in connection with a violent domestic dispute in Madoc.
Central Hastings O-P-P say a woman was pushed, punched, choked and struck on the head after an argument with a man at a cottage on Crystal Beach Lane. The man, whose name wasn’t released, was charged with assault.
More Election Candidates in Prince Edward
Former Wellington Councillor Jim Dunlop wants to return to Prince Edward County Council.
Dunlop represented the community from 2003 until ’06, but didn’t seek re-election four years ago. However, he has been very involved in fundraising for the Wellington Community Centre the past couple of years, and has filed his nomination papers to run for councillor in Wellington. Current councillor Peter Mertens is one of five candidates so far for Mayor in this fall’s election.

Meanwhile Jennifer Cobb of Wellington put in her election documents today for North Prince Edward Trustee on the Hastings-Prince Edward School Board.
Former Police Chief Court Update
The former Chief of Police in Trenton and Quinte West will appear in court on charges of assault and sexual assault in three weeks in Belleville. 61-year old William Armstrong was charged following an investigation into complaints of domestic violence received by the Quinte West OPP Crime Unit in March. The assault is alleged to have occurred on New Year’s Day of this year and the sexual assault is alleged to have occurred on New Year’s Day six years ago. Armstrong will appear to be spoken to on June 21st.
Quinte West Tourism greeters
The welcome mat is out once again this year for tourists enjoying summer holidays in Quinte West..
Tourism Coordinator Christine Painter says information centres are open at the Chamber of Commerce office in downtown Trenton, the Holiday Inn and in Carrying Place..
She says the workers help tourists interested in any attraction in the Quinte Area. There was an increase in the number of visitors from Quebec to Quinte West last year.
Outbreak at Picton Hospital
Staff at the Picton Hospital have begun aggressive infection control procedures, dealing with an outbreak of M-R-S-A.
Five patients tested positive, but they are not sick. M-R-S-A is a bacterium responsible for several difficult to treat infections.
Quinte Health Care Official Susan Rowe says the infection control procedures include isolation restrictions, increased cleaning of the unit, dedicated medical equipment and a temporary stop to any group patient activities on the unit. The situation is being monitored daily by the Q-H-C Infection Control team.
Two OMB hearings in Belleville
The Ontario Municipal Board will visit Belleville twice in August.
The O-M-B is hearing an appeal by Christina Bogza of City Council’s decision last year rejecting her bid to convert 77 townhouses on Tracey Park Drive to condominiums. That hearing will be held on August tenth.
The board will also hold a hearing on the 18th into Williams Hotels’ concerns about two sewage capacity studies for an area along North Front Street. One done for the Holiday Inn Express said more development wasn’t feasabile, while another done for the Avalon Motel, which plans a large expansion, says there is adequate capacity.
Warkworth Murder Suspect Update
The man accused of murdering Michelle Barnoski of Warkworth will be back in court in early July.
Pretrial motions for Marc Vickers are to begin in mid-September on a charge of first-degree murder, but he will return to Peterborough Superior Court before then, on July second.
Defence Counsel Gary McNeely says he and the crown are still discussing what statements will be part of the trial, and whether Vickers’ alleged actions after Barnoski’s death will be counted. A boy convicted of first-degree murder in Barnoski’s shooting death in May, 2008 will be sentenced this Friday.
Members Sell Belleville Legion
They won’t be moving for at least a year but Belleville Legion members have voted overwhelmingly to sell their longtime home. In a vote held Saturday night, the membership voted 131-to-2 to sell the property at 132 Pinnacle Street to a Toronto company for 500-thousand dollars. The property had been listed for $599,900. The new company takes control September 1st and the Legion will lease the main floor for one more year. The Legion is currently negotiating with the city to puchase the old Recreation office next door.
