Funeral for Jim Parkhurst

Belleville has lost a long-time businessman and philanthropist…Jim Parkhurst died Monday at age 61. Parkhurst, owner and operator of Parkhurst Transportation, was a strong community supporter including the Belleville Police safety village, Santa claus parade, Minor hockey association and Belleville’s mobility bus, among many others. He sponsored a bus that carried veterans to CFB Trenton so they could participate in repatriation ceremonies for soldiers killed in Afghanistan. A funeral service for Jim Parkhurst will be held at John R. Bush funeral home at 2 P.M. Saturday.
Celebrating the volunteers
Hundreds of Quinte area volunteers are expected to attend this week’s International Day of the Volunteer celebration.
Spokesperson for Volunteer and Information Quinte, Brenda Snider, says they represent a broad section of community life. She says they range from Meals on Wheels to the Military Family Resource Centre…and include service clubs and sports organizations. The celebration, at the Sears Home Furniture store in Belleville Thursday evening, has a door prize… a trip for four to Quebec City donated by Via Rail, a two night stay at Williams Hotel donated by John Williams, and a 200-dollar food allowance donated by the city of Belleville. .
This stocking stuffer helps parkland
Quinte Conservation is offering shoppers an easy answer to their Christmas gift problems…and help the environment at the same time.
The agency is offering gift certificates at 20-dollars an acre. Spokesperson Jennifer May-Anderson says they make good stocking stuffers and the money is used to maintain Quinte Conservation land. This year the money will be used to improve the signage at Quinte Conservation, H-J Mcfarland Park in Prince Edward County, and Depot Lake campground in Greater Napanee. May-Anderson says, so far, 49-acres have been adopted…the goal is to adopt-out 250-acres before the end of the year.
Jobs for Cobourg
A 2 and a half million dollar grant by the provincial government is bringing new jobs to Cobourg.
MPP Lou Rinaldi announced the grant to Weston Bakeries in Cobourg.
The money will help with an 18 thousand square foot expansion at the Weston’s Ready Bake facility.
60 new jobs will be added over the next several months.
Man arrested after car vandalized
A 22-year-old Toronto man has been charged with damaging a vehicle at a Carrying Place area home.
Quinte West O-P-P say the car, parked at an address on the Loyalist Parkway, was extensively damaged after being vandalized yesterday..
Osmon Awad was arrested in Trenton, and charged with mischief.
Thieves Strike overnight in Belleville
Police are investigating an early morning breakin on Belleville’s east hill. A Queen Street home was entered sometime between 11 o’clock last night and 4 o’clock this morning. Police say the suspects stole money, electronics and alcohol.
Northumberland Crown Attorney charged
An assistant crown attorney in Northumberland County has been arrested near Napanee for impaired driving..
Nancy Rae was charged after someone called the O-P-P, complaining about a motorists’ erratic driving. However, police refused to reveal the name of the woman, who was arrested and released, because the information had not been sworn to in court. A Toronto Sun report says Rae is charged with impaired driving, having a blood alcohol level over the legal limit while driving, and resisting arrest. She is due to appear in court on December 14th. Rae had been charged with careless driving by Northumberland O-P-P after an incident on October 23rd.
Drug charges laid against Madoc residents
Drug Charges have been laid against two Madoc residents.
Central Hastings O-P-P stopped a speeding vehicle on Victoria Street South in Tweed, and found contraband cigarettes and marijuana inside. Twenty-nine-year-old Jennifer Moon and 30-year-old Everett McMullin were charged with possession. They will appear in Belleville Provincial Court in January.
Murder preliminary hearing resumes today
The preliminary hearing for two men charged with murdering a Trenton woman resumes in Belleville Provincial Court today.
Two weeks of the prelim for 48-year-old Michael Garniss and 30-year-old Jason Frost, both of no fixed address, were already held in late October and early November. They were charged with first degree murder by Quinte West O-P-P after 48-year-old Lisa Palmiere was shot to death at a home in Trenton on February 28th.
Three projects advance in Aviva Fund vote
Three more local projects have advanced to the semifinals of the Aviva Community Fund competition.
The Quinte West Youth Centre and a Medical Centre at Camp Trillium near Wellington got enough votes in the third round of voting to move on the next ballot, beginning this Thursday, in the large project category. Also advancing was a 50th anniversary playground revitalization project at Prince Charles School in Trenton, in the small project section.
