Belleville woman dies after being hit by truck

Police have released the name of a woman who was killed in a collision on Station Street in Belleville.

25-year-old Jennifer Leanne Hazell died as a result of the injuries she sustained when she was hit by a truck at two o’clock this morning.

The victim was crossing the street when a Ford pick-up hit her in the eastbound lane.

The investigation is ongoing.


Red Nose Reminder

As a record holiday season winds to a festive close… volunteers are preparing for one more night of Quinte’s Operation Red Nose.

You can arrange to get you and your vehicle home safely tonight… by calling Operation Red Nose at 962-4334.

Volunteer teams have made over 14-hundred trips this season alone… a local all-time high since the programme’s beginnings six years ago.


Safe holiday wishes from OPP

Provincial police are reminding the public to think safety first this New Year’s Eve.

A New Year’s Message from the Peterborough County O-P-P suggests designating a driver if you’re going to be drinking alcohol tonight.. or taking a bus or taxi home from your celebration.

Provincial police will be patroling local roadways as part of the Festive RIDE programme overnight.


Warkworth functioning normally after violent incident

An inmate at Warkworth Institution has been segregated from the others following a voilent incident.

Officials say the incident happened around 5:30 Wednesday evening… when correctional officers on routine patrol noticed one inmate in distress in his cell.

The man was reportedly suffering from injuries to his face, side and hands.

The alleged victim was taken to hospital for treatment and the incident is being investigated by the O-P-P.

Officials say visits are not affected and the institution is operating under normal routine.


Robbery assumed in gas station incident

A fiesty gas station attendant may have stopped a robbery in Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield Township.

The female cashier at Fifes Bay Gas Bar was working alone yesterday (THUR) around 6 p-m… when a man allegedly pushed her away from the till and tried to reach in and grab some money.

The attendant reportedly slammed the till drawer shut on the culprit’s fingers and chased him out of the store.

Peterborough County O-P-P later found a large knife in the area where the suspect’s car had been parked.

Police say the victim was shaken but not injured.

Investigators have not released how much was stolen, if anything at all.

Light coloured jacket with blue green markings

Snow machine collision near Bancroft

It was a scary way to start the new year for two snowmobilers near Bancroft.

O-P-P responded to Bentley Lake overnight… where a snowmobile driver and his passenger had collided with a tree on shore.

48-year-old Michael O’Day of Faraday Township was taken by ambulance to Quinte Healthcare North Hastings for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

His 45-year-old passenger was thrown from the machine… but sustained no injuries.

The investigation continues.


Last Minute of Play for Operation Rednose

It’s the final night of another very busy season for Operation Rednose Quinte. Volunteers made 45 trips last night getting 84 people home safely. That pushes the number of rides to over 14-hundred and the number of people taken home to almost 28-hundred this season. The service is available for New Year’s Eve parties tonight. CP Train Stalls on Belleville Tracks

It was a frustrating twenty minutes…or so…for motorists trying to get into…or out of…Belleville’s Foster Ward this morning. A CP freight train unexplicably stopped on the tracks stretching across all the level crossings trapping motorists. The train started to move again just after 10am. A CP spokesperson says the train stopped after a mechanical failire was detected…..local emergency officials were notified….and, the problem was quickly repaired.


Special Belleville Council Meeting

Belleville Council meets in special session next week. Mayor Neil Ellis says the Tuesday afternoon meeting is a chance to finish the appointment process for a number of city committees. Some committee appointments were made prior to the Christmas holidays but there are still a number of seats to fill. The meeting is set for 5pm and will be an in-camera session.


Approaching Record Temperature

We’ll be closer to the record high temperature for New Year’s Eve than the record low. Balmy conditions will hang around for the next 24-hours or more with Staff Meteorologist Ken McKinley calling for a high of 6 today and 7 degrees tomorrow.
The record high at CFB Trenton’s Weather Office for New Year’s Eve was set in 1965 when the temperature hit 12.2. The coldest Dec 31st on record was in 1963 when we plummeted to minus-27.2. The normal high for today is minus 1.7.
